November 1952 - April 26, 2025
NLRHS Class of 1970

Jack David Plating, 72, of Greenville, South Carolina, passed away following a rapid neurodegenerative brain disease on April 26, 2025. He was at home and at peace.

Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Jack built a life rooted in connection, leadership, and love. His 35-year career began with Motorola C&E, Digital Paging, and A+ Communications. In 1989, he moved to Greenville to join Metro Mobile, helping lead the company through several mergers that ultimately shaped Verizon Wireless, where he served as Chief Operating Officer. After retiring in 2010, Jack devoted his time to supporting new entrepreneurial ventures and connecting people through his work with SEARCH Ministries — continuing his lifelong passion for building relationships.

Jack was a force — warm, driven, fun-loving, and fiercely loyal. He had a gift for spotting talent in unexpected places and for seeing people exactly as they were. His dry sense of humor, big heart, and servant leadership left a mark on everyone lucky enough to know him.

He loved nothing more than spending time with family and friends, soaking up lake life, and mentoring others along their journeys.

Jack is survived by his wife of fifty years, Cindy ; his children, Jill Plating, Todd (Jenna) Plating, and Chris (Kendra) Plating; his grandchildren, Caitlyn Peter, Emma Peter, Ashton Plating, Hattie Plating, and Wilder Plating; and his loyal dog, Bailey. He is also survived by his brothers, Larry (Barb) Plating, Steve (Sheryl) Plating, Tom Plating (Denise King), and was preceded in death by his sisters, Marilyn Fisher and Cathy Dorchak.

Visitation will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., with a service following at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, at First Presbyterian Church in Greenville.

Though Jack was widely admired for his many professional achievements, his greatest legacy is the enduring connections he created — a testament to a life well-lived.
