Mack was a patriot and member of the West Essex Conservative Club. However, he was also a conscientious objector. So, when he received his draft notice, he asked if he could serve as a Navy Corpsman. He died in Vietnam.

Donny Allaway served in Vietnam with HHC,4th Inf,9th Inf 25 Inf Div and was killed on 5/18/66 1month,2 days after entering Vietnam,in binh duong Province.He was awared a purple heart and bronze star with valor.
Mack Wilhelm was a medic with H/S Co 1st Bn 9th Marines and was killed in Quang Tri Province on 2/19/69 three months 3 days after arriving in Vietnam, He was awared purple heart and Navy Cross and has a wing named after him at VA hospital in Houston Tx.
There is special recognition for both our classmates in the Veterans section of Memorial Park and the Town Hall in Livingston and Donny is also remembered at the NJ Vietnam Memorial in Holmdel NJ.

I first met Mack Houston Wilhelm at Burnet Hill Elementary. At his home, the family had an interesting collection of Civil War memorabilia.
The family was from Rockport, TX. He was buried back there. I believe nieces and nephews still live in that general area near Houston.
Mack was one of those rare persons who did not have any tooth decay. He showed me; he had no fillings.
After high school, I lost track of him as we moved to Denver, Colorado. He was an all-around nice guy. It's tragic to die for such a futile war.
