I've had an interesting ride... Around the time of the ten year reunion, I got myself a bit more together emotionally, and finally admitted to myself and to most of the world that I am gay. I guess I probably always knew, but growing up in the time that we did, it wasn't such an acceptable thing to be. I just got to the point where I had to be me, if that makes sense?
After getting out of a very unhealthy relationship, I met my Michelle. Because of her, I quit living a double life of "roommates" and came out to my family. In 2007, we bought a house together in Firestone Park here in Akron. I'm the happiest I have ever been. On October 22, 2008 we were married in San Francisco, CA. While our vows won't mean anything here in backwards Ohio (and now possibly in CA), it will mean something to us! Both families are more than excited for us! :)
With both sets of extended families, we are aunts to a total of eight nieces and nephews--two nieces from my sister and one niece and five nephews from Michelle's siblings!
Back in the day, if anyone had ever told me this is where I'd be, I would have laughed in disbelief! But now, I am sure this is where I'm meant to be!
Oddly enough, the person that I maintained the most consistent contact with from my high school days was Ray Boggs, the colorguard instructor from my time in the 'Leaf's marching band. Sadly, Ray passed away on April 1, 2008 from complications of a genetic liver disease. Ray was my teacher, mentor and friend. I came out to him long before the family. He never judged, and I am thankful that I got to say good-bye before he passed away.
Now, with the 20 year coming up, I am looking forward to reconnecting with the 'Leaf peeps. It's fascinating to see how much we've all grown (or not). :)
