List 3 happy memories of LHS
  • I was so shy that I can’t think of any! Compared to my happy memories each day now, being married. However, I did enjoy Orchestra (the yearly musicals especially), a small group of friends and school activities like pep rallies, assemblies, basketball and football games. I really began to blossom and come out of my shell at USU where I not only enjoyed my classes but joined a sorority (the LDS one), a student ward, and a servicing organization (Spurs). Plus, I dated a whole lot and had fun!

What have you learned since high school?
  • I’ll answer this last question with another emphasis, more like, what has happened in your life since LHS. In a word, EVERTYHING, I graduated from USU with Honors in English. Just before that, I served an LDS mission in Arizona/Las Vegas, instead of getting a teaching job; I went to BYU where I got two masters, one in English and the other in Organizational Behaviors.
  • But the Lord had other plans for me, I didn’t have a career in either field and instead he blessed me with health challenges and experiences in living and learning. His specialized curriculum, which has meant everything to my knowledge and personal development. Looking back, I’m very grateful that in His wisdom my life went in that direction. The results have been worth it all. After living several years in the Orem/Provo area, 6 years in So. California and a year in Idaho Fall, I moved to Bountiful in 2001 where my happy, fulfilled life began.
  • In 2003 I was called to be an ordinance worker in the Bountiful Temple. It was heaven and I’m in heaven each time I go there, which is sometimes 4-5 times a week although I /we work two days there. In late 2006 my future husband just asked me out. He is also a temple worker and had just lost his wife 8 mos before, I knew them both, but not well, (there often isn’t time to get to know those you work alongside for several months.)
  • We got married in March, in the temple during our Saturday shift. Each day is great and despite challenges all couples face, we’ve never had a problem between us and don’t anticipate we will. It really has helped us to both be mature adults to begin with.
  • I inherited (after being childless and single for almost 40 years, since HS) 3 children, 18 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren! – mostly from my husbands’ second wife. It’s great.
  • We have no direct, responsibilities for any of these kids, no one else live with us, he’s retired (from Lockheed-Martin, an engineer who worked on the F-16 at Hill AFB), so we are free to do what we want. Our time and energies go toward 1) Church and Temple work, 2) Friends and Family, and 3) our yard and veggie garden and berries (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, gooseberries, etc and fruit trees and 2 grape varieties. We’re busy!)
  • If all goes well, we plan to be on a two-year mission in 9 months. When we return, we’ll continue serving in the Bountiful temple and hope to get into genealogy and family history . . . like the rest of those “old” people!
  • It’s been fun and very interesting to hear about others, I think it was our 5th or 10th reunion that everyone wrote a paragraph and then a copy was sent to me (I was in NY that summer – 1978) along with reunion pictures, and I think a list of all our classmates who went and all who didn’t.

When you think of the 60’s you think of?
·        When I think of the 60’s, I am reminded of what turmoil the country was in at the time, with Vietnam, the riots, free love, drug cultures, the music, etc. These may have been the “negative” elements, but it was also a time of finding one’s self. We all did it different ways, and some of us might still be searching. But that is good.
  • I also remember the lighter side of life – my GTO and racing on Main Street while trying to keep an eye out for the cops. It was also a time of discovery, trying to understand what it was all about, wondering what I would be doing in my future. Fortunately, things have gone well for me. Like most of us, I have made a few mistakes along the way, hit a few speed bumps, but thank God I wasn’t going fast enough to tear out the whole undercarriage, figuratively speaking. Overall, the 60’s were a good part of my life.

Where is your favorite place to chill, relax and rejuvenate?
  • Where is my favorite place to relax, chill, and rejuvenate?  Besides our backyard with the pool, waterfall and fountains (our house is called Casa del Agua), living in California as my wife and I do, makes this a very difficult question for me to answer. There is eye candy everywhere. I visit Tahoe quite often, both in summer and winter. Yosemite is another favorite spot of mine, but there are so many others. Monterey is another beautiful place in which to repose and recharge one’s batteries. North, South, East and West, California has it all.

List 3 happy memories of LHS
  • Three happy memories of LHS…Hmmmm, there were so many, this is hard to answer. Seeing James Willey getting tossed into the creek in his ROTC uniform was a good one. (Just kidding, ok?) I had a lot of fun. Some of the bus trips for the debate team were pretty interesting. Going to Boulder with the Sponsors was a happy time, too. Even though the LHS drill teams didn’t win, it was worth getting there and seeing the others. (No I don’t drill with my 30-06, just in case anyone was wondering.) Overall it was a good time. I don’t have any specific memories that really stand out at the moment. Have to get back to you on this one.

Since LHS
  • My bio?? Sounds so formal. Basically, I am working for Emerson Electrical Reliability Services in Pleasanton, CA. I am a Supervising Engineer there with a second function as a Code Compliance Engineer. Won’t bore anyone with position details, but basically, I take care of the high voltage electrical needs of large clients such as Intel, Applied Materials, HP, Sandia Labs, Oracle, and others. I set up and lead complete shutdowns of their facilities electrical systems and then test them top to bottom. I deal with voltages from 230,000 down to millivolts. It is a dangerous job, but pays well. The way I came upon this was one of my former students from the Prime Power School called me and asked me if I would be interested in working on the West Coast, since I lived in Virginia for 21 years and hated every minute of it. I was getting married at Lake Tahoe 3 weeks from the day he called, so I interviewed on my honeymoon (what class!!??) and the rest is history. (The guy who interviewed me was also one of my former students. Don’t burn your bridges!!). My wife, Barb, didn’t mind as most of her family lives here. Except for the heavy liberal influence here, it is a great place to be.
  • I wish I could have been able to attend the reunion, but unfortunately, my work schedule will not allow it. I am in the middle of a huge commissioning job at the Conoco-Phillips Refinery here, and won’t be done for a few more weeks. I am doing what I can to help lower the prices at the pump, and besides, every day I work there, the more I feel like I am getting some of my gas money back. We also have Chevron as a client and are doing the same thing there.
  • I know some of you live in the Bay area as I do. If you do and would like to get together with the better halves for dinner or lunch, or just to chat, call me at (408) 968-1211. That is another thing about California – the cuisine….

What have you learned since high school?
·        More than I could have ever imagined. It’s almost like I have lived two lifetimes already, I learned to conquer my fears during my four years in the military. I finally learned to apply myself academically in college. I learned how precious children, family and faith are. I found my true calling in life after years of playing music in Bands for A&M records in Hollywood. I became a Lutheir (guitar maker) and an electronics technician and now I make the instruments and amplifiers that I used to play on (and still do) I learned the job of working for myself and opened my own business many years ago. I learned to let go, let God, and love myself with all my faults. I learned about unconditional love and that changed my life.

What have you learned since high school?
·        I’ve learned that life is short, enjoy each moment of everyday. The little things are most important and when you look back it is what you will miss the most. I’ve learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance. Be kind, be happy and happiness is a journey, not a destination. Be the best you. Work like you don’t need money, love like you’ve never been hurt and dance like no one is watching. I’ve learned I still have a lot to learn.

Herm Olsen

When you think of the 60’s you think of?
·        I think of becoming a mighty teenager. I think of the race between J.F.K. and Richard Nixon. I remember the Camelot years and Jackie Kennedy’s beauty. I remember the old Junior High School and the earthquake which damaged the school. I remember the boys P.E. class and how embarrassed we were to line up buck-naked in the shower room, doing roll call, and then having to swim au-natural in the pool – always fearful that there were girls hiding in the bleachers to gaze at our nudity.
·        I remember the day John Kennedy was shot, and how people cried, including my dad (who never cried). I remember being frightened – because this wasn’t that long after the Cuban missile crisis. We feared the Russians would use our confusion at his death as an excuse to invade us.
·        I recall L.B.J. vs. Goldwater, and how the national commentators wondered whether the Republican Party would ever again be a significant national force after the Johnson landslide.
·        I recall the Beatles first appearing on Ed Sullivan, and how everybody in school talked about it the next day, and how immediately the “Beta” look took over as a hair style. I remember packing up at the old Junior High School and moving to the brand new Junior High School over Christmas break in 1963.
·        We took the “new math” with us, but we also had to take Chardin Morrell and Myrtle “the Turtle” Holmes. C. Lee Colston was the stern Assistant Principal to Sherm Hansen, but Mrs. Robbins was nice. Loye Painter taught health (and made the boys leave during the session on girls’ sexuality.) She also taught P.E., along with Murray Maughn and Richard Sackett.
·        I remember freshman week at LHS when we had to wear beanies and suffer the indignation of ‘initiation’ by any senior. I recall Hattie Morrell, Phoebe Snell and Inez Tingey as ancient dinosaurs, out of touch with long hair and exploding puberty. But Mr. Haslem was cool, and Mrs. Hart was a knockout. J. Paul Miller was Leo Johnson’s hatchet man. Ray Tom was smart. An Shii Lin was terribly quite, and Hal Lewis and Rod Tueller coached forever.
·        I remember ice skating at Central Park after Joe Friedli would get the pond smooth as glass, and I thought the Monkeys would remain popular forever. And who can forget Mr. Tim’s grocery and candy supply?
·        I recall ROTC and how I hated the two-a-days football practice. I recall the boys getting in trouble for ‘creeking’ Jim Willey. There was senior day at Lagoon and our all-night party at the Country Club. And I realized that while drugs and Vietnam existed, neither had scarred our souls yet. That would come later.

When you think about the ‘60's you think of?
·        Big hair, beach bikini movies, the Beatles and the Beach Boys, hating being the youngest one in the class (Lorene Allen and I, as I recall, were the youngest girls because our birthdays were just before the Kindergarten cutoff).

Where is your favorite place to chill, relax, and rejuvenate?
·        Hands down, the beach. Since I’ve lived in California in a beach town (either in Los Angeles or in Pismo Beach) from the time I graduated from USU in 1972 until 1991, I was spoiled with being able to be at the beach any time I felt like it. Whenever we go on vacation, there’s a bit of beach time included. Tide pools are one of my favorite things. Unfortunately, there aren’t any in Las Vegas....

List 3 happy memories of LHS.
·        I loved going to football games and basketball games and cheering on the teams. I even liked my little red pep club dress! I loved the OUTSTANDING drama and musical productions and even enjoyed being a Sponsor and ushering at them. (I think I usually memorized the music from each one each year and even part of the script from Unsinkable Molly Brown! I always wished I had some talent to be in one, but I didn’t.) I remember model UN and debate trips out of town that made me feel so grown up (the delusions of youth).
·        I actually pulled out my yearbook and was reminded of all the extracurricular activities we had available to us, and the teacher time they must have involved, and was humbled at what I took for granted back then.

What have you learned since High School?
·        We were so young and thought we knew so much more than we did!  Not academically (wish I could remember all that information at this point) but with respect to interpersonal relationships and self- awareness. So far it's been a little like a roller-coaster ride, with ups and downs and scary parts.  Maybe one of the hidden benefits of getting older, and having a correspondingly patchier memory, is forgetting the intensity of the scary parts and remembering the good parts more (grandchildren help).  I think I’ve also - finally - learned to slow down and enjoy things a bit more, instead of trying to cram as much as possible into every day. Don’tlet anyone kid you - old dogs really can learn new tricks!

When you think of the 60’s you think of?
·        Being a teenager, ice skating, good parents, smaller homes, less materialism, high school dances, singing in Chauntaires, Mr. Bradford’s Aprils Fool’s pranks, pep rallies, football and basketball games, Seminary, Senior Hits – a special part of my life.

Where is your favorite place to chill, relax and rejuvenate?
·        We love to travel and see our children and grandchildren. I also love to walk every morning and enjoy nature (even in the winter). It’s fun to set in a comfortable chair at home and read a good book. It’s also relaxing to watch a good movie or listen to uplifting music.

List 3 happy memories of LHS.
·        I loved being in Chauntaires when we performed: “Elijah” and Christmas concerts ending with the “Hallelujah Chorus”.
·        It was fun to help decorate for Junior prom, weaving the whole ceiling as part of the Egyptian theme and being “excused” from classes that day.
·        I have good memories of helping make scenery props, costumes and writing the script for our 'Hillbilly Hit’ in Senior Hits.

What have your learned since high school?
1)      My dad was right! The best pay in the world is the feeling you get when you help someone without being paid.
2)      Get to know a person. Look beyond outward appearance to their heart. One of the best friends I have was in a wheelchair, with severe Diabetes and heart problems, blind in one eye and poor sight in the other with a hunchback. She reached out to people giving children rides on the back of her motorized chair; chose to be happy and enjoy life. She was an angel on earth – now in heaven. She taught me to be a better sport about my trials in life.
