Lane was born in Soda Springs, Idaho on Valentine's Day in 1950 to Alvin Rex and Pauline Cardon Whitehead. She and her two sisters, Robyn and Carolyn, were raised in Grace, Idaho and Logan, Utah.
Lane graduated from Logan High School in 1968 and married fellow classmate, Jeff Drage. They lived in Monument, Colorado.
