Scott Summers

October 6, 1950 - December 2, 1999

Scott Lowell Summers passed away at home in Salt Lake City on Dec. 2, 1999. He was born Oct. 6, 1950, in Logan, Utah, son of Lowell Poiney Summers and Eva Marie Sealy Summers. He grew up in the Logan 7th Ward, and attended Logan City schools. As a youth he was active in scouting and enjoyed trips with his family to Yellowstone and the Tetons.

Scott served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Eastern Atlantic States Mission from 1969-71. He attended Utah State University, where he served in the Blue Key Fraternity and as president of the AED Society. He graduated with honors in 1978 with a bachelor's degree in sociology. He subsequently completed coursework for a master's degree at the University of Illinois in Human Resources/Manpower Planning. Scott had been employed as a Human Resource Advisor by the U.S. Agency for International Development, working in Boston, Mass., and Washington, D.C.

At age 41 Scott suffered a disabling stroke. During the last few years Scott has coped with the challenge of his disability with valor, continuing to serve his immediate and extended family with untiring efforts.

Scott married Kaye Lynne Sorenson Sept. 14, 1973, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They are parents of Garrett Scott, Laura Lynne, and Alyssa Brooke.

Scott excelled in his academic pursuits, setting a high standard of achievement for his family. He was always an active mentor, and delighted in the academic progress of his children. During the years of his disability, working with his children on their educations became his daily joy and preoccupation. In addition to his own children, his younger brothers, nephews and nieces came under his motivating influence to excel in their academic efforts. His own academic work had already set a standard for serious study which, combined with his reverence for learning, lifted the sights of a whole generation of his nieces and nephews.

Scott delighted in service for others, a life theme which began early. Dedicated leadership in priesthood quorums and other church assignments was a repeated expression of his desire to serve. Scott's support of his mother and father through the many years of their health difficulties continued even after he faced the challenge of his own disability.

Scott was proud of the achievement of earning his Eagle Scout Award. Scott loved the Scouting program as a youth, and found in its programs an exciting environment in which to express his dual talents of learning and service. Later, as a Scout leader, Scott happily devoted his time and talents to the development of the boys in his local troop. He valued Scouting's role in his life and the lives of others for setting a pattern of hard work in study, learning, preparedness, achievement, and service, which carried on to the end of his life and affected all whose lives he touched. He cherished the time he spent with his son Garrett as he earned his own Eagle Scout Award.

Everybody liked Scott. A conversation with Scott always left one feeling better. He was genuinely interested in others, and his optimism, praise, and support served to build, uplift and give confidence.

Scott was preceded in death by his father, Lowell P. Summers, and mother ,Eva Marie Summers, both of Logan, and his brother, Richard Poiney Summers of Salt Lake City. He is survived by his wife Kaye Lynne; children Garrett Scott, Laura Lynne, and Alyssa Brooke; siblings Paul (Dora Mae) of Denver, Margaret (Samuel) Daines of Logan, and Bradley (Mary Ann) of Logan.
