Attended and graduated from University of Alaska. Played on the basketball team. The weather was a huge change, being a California girl! I enjoyed attending a smaller college, my biggest class in my major (Journalism) was basic photo, 30 kids; smallest class Law of the Press, 5 kids. I only had 1 general ed class in an auditorium, I think it was maybe 100 kids. It was a great place to get a degree.
After college, Mom let me play for my last summer before joining the real world and getting a real job! Played semi-pro fastpitch softball. Which meant a lot of traveling and playing softball that didn't cost me a dime. It was the best summer of all. Of course, continued playing recreational softball and basketball until I hit 40 and injuries were taking too long to recover from. LOL!
Had 2 jobs out of college, JC Penney as a merchandise manager (5 years); and Pacific Bell/AirTouch/Vodaphone/Verizon (36 years) as a service rep, supervisor, manager and associate director. Most jobs were in resource management, responsibilities including scheduling and forecasting for consumer call centers. I was very lucky, I loved my job, had great bosses and teams.
Retired June 29, 2018 and until covid, was loving retirement and traveling. Looking forward to getting to start traveling again.
The thing I am most thankful for is my family.
My wife Sandy and I will be celebrating our 40th anniversary in May 2021. Going to Kauai in December to celebrate! It's been a great adventure so far!!! Since we have been together, her family has welcomed me. She/we have a daughter, 3 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren who all live in Michigan. The grandchildren are all grown and doing their own thing. But we do get to see our daughter one to two times a year, which we love. Also on Sandy's side, we have a niece that lives right next door to us with her grown sons, our great nephews. Our niece also has a daughter, who has a daughter. Sandy's sister lives in Washington. I am thankful to be part of the Ashby family.
Most of my family have gone to heaven. My grandmother, Mom, sister and brother are all watching over me. They all supported me my entire life. They all sat on many bleachers at most of the games I played. I think about them all and have many memories that always bring a smile to my face. My nephew and his wife live about 25 miles from me; and a niece near San Luis Obispo, with twin boys and a daughter. I get to get bleacher butt and watch them all play their sports. They all mean the world to me.
Moved to Oregon in 2001. Lived near the coast for while, then moved inland to Cottage Grove in 2006. It's a cute little town. Our neighborhood is very closely knit. Everyone watches out for each other.
We enjoy attending theatre locally and in Eugene. We have had season tickets to Univ of Oregon women's basketball for the last few years, however, I do pull for Stanford when they play each other, as I was a season ticket holder for several years when I lived in the Bay Area. Have attended a few concerts, last one was Cher. It was an awesome concert!
