Joseph A. Schmid – German Teacher at Millikan High School

Born: July 24, 1934 – Illinois Died: December 1, 2000 - Groveland, Tuolumne, California. My husband and I (Linda Short Pacholl) were living in Groveland, CA, when we read in our local paper, “The Union Democrat” of Mr. Schmids’ horrible accident and I wanted to share the information with the alumni of Millikan. The newspaper article stated, the Joseph Schmid lived in small German Community just East of Groveland named Yosemite Estates. Mr. Schmid had an appointment in Sonora to have the brakes checked on his car and would be meeting friends later that day for dinner. His friends called the police later that day to let them know Mr. Schmid had not arrived for his car appointment, nor his dinner date. The police found Mr. Schmid two days later in his car at the bottom of Old Priest Grade ravine. He had not survived the crash. I was very saddened to read of Mr. Schmids death. Living in Groveland for almost 20 years, I know Old and New Priest Grade like the back of my hand. It would have been safer for Mr. Schmids to take the New Grade, as he would have been on the mountain side of the hill, rather that Old Priest Grade, which is on the canyon side of the hill. He would have had to allow for the 15 minutes of extra travel time, but he would still be with us today. Respectfully, Linda Short Pacholl P.S. Groveland, CA is off of Highway 120 about 20 miles out side of Yosemite National Park. Submitted by: Linda Short Pacholl.

Eaton O Bemis,

Millikan's Principal 1956-1967 Courtesy of Rick Bowman: Mr. Bemis spent 25 years in the Long Beach School system, beginning at Franklin Junior High School. Two years later, he moved to what was then the Lakewood School District, where he worked until that district merged with Long Beach in 1945. He worked as principal of several Long Beach high schools and in 1956 was asked to head Long Beach's newest school, Millikan where he stayed until he retired in 1967. He moved to Leisure World, Seal Beach, where he lived until he died on October 11, 1993. He was 91.

ERNEST S. BECKETT

History teacher at Millikan High School for 34 years, and retired in 1993. He passed away June 20, 2002 at age 65. Survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Margaret Anne Beckett. Father of Paul Beckett, Susan (Michael) Kirby and Peggy (Jerry) Wilkins. Grandfather of Connor Michael Kirby and Cole Beckett Kirby. Published in the Long Beach Press-Telegram from 6/25/2002 - 6/26/2002.  I WAS VERY SAD TO LEARN THAT HE HAD PASSED AWAY LAST YEAR. YOU SEE MY FAMILY HAD A BIG HISTORY WITH HIM. MY MOM WHO WENT TO MILLIKAN HAD HIM AND ALSO MY 2 SISTERS AND MYSELF. HE WAS AN AMAZING TEACHER WHO WE ALL LOVED AND WILL MISS. JULIE ( GATLIN) KAUFMAN CLASS OF 1983

ROBERT W. BOWER (Choir and Music)

Music teacher at Millikan; died October 28, 1999. Andrew Friedman Class of '78, "Tevye" in Fiddler on the Roof, May 1978, submitted the following: Robert W. Bower was the Choral Director at Millikan High School since the school opened its doors. During his decades at Milikan, Mr. Bower changed the lives of hundreds of students (I was one of them; he saved my life) and provided special memories that will never be forgotten. Every year, Mr. Bower would choose a Broadway musical for his students to perform; he would cast, direct, and produce each show to standing ovations and packed auditoriums. He was not just my teacher, my director and my mentor, he became over the years a cherished friend. Teaching wasn't a job to Mr. Bower, it was his life and his great love. Mr. Bower helped students from all walks of life find joy and fulfillment in music, and we found talents we didn't realize we had. He was a great man and an inspired teacher who will never be replaced. I am grateful that I was able to see him days before his passing, and tell him that he made a difference in my life and the lives of an entire generation of kids. Our loss is heaven's gain. From: Patrick J. Haney '60 I knew Bob pretty well, having been a member of Alpha Theta Chi (he was the faculty sponsor), as well as being in the orchestra and a participant in some of the joint vocal/instrumental presentations over which Bob presided. After graduation my wife and I always made it a point to visit him at his home in Seal Beach whenever we were in California, our last visit being shortly before his death. (In fact, he even came to visit us once when I was stationed with the AF in England, and once in Florida during my “second career” at a community college there.) He was quite a character, and I think of him often.

JOHN O. JENKINS, Art & Golf Teacher

at Millikan from 1957 To 1981. Died at 82, January 9, 2001 "During World War II, John was a Navy pilot, serving two tours of duty and rising to the rank of lieutenant. He won many commendations, including the Navy's highest medal of honor, the U. S. Navy Cross." From the Long Beach PRESS-TELEGRAM 1/15/01 John O. Jenkins began teaching in the Long Beach Unified School District at Poly High School, but transferred to Millikan when it opened. He taught art and stage design and assisted with the golf team there until his retirement in 1981. (He also taught some Art History classes at Long Beach City College in the evenings.) His love of golf, art and art history coupled with his quick wit and sense of humor continued until his passing in 2001. He is survived by his wife, Eloise Jenkins (who taught elementary school in the Long Beach School District), his 3 children who all attended Millikan--Judy Jenkins Onulduran (Class of 1963), John Jenkins, (Class of 1967), and Gwynne Jenkins Anderson (Class of 1968), and many grand and great grandchildren.

JOHN C. GLOVER (Languages)

Retired in 1976 and moved to San Mateo. He died there at age 78, on Christmas Day, in 1997. He is buried at Westminster Memorial Park. John Glover was also the Track and Cross Country Coach. From: Paul Woish

Mr. Buckner "Coach Buckey" Harris

Buckner New Harris, Jr.
1927-2014

Buckner (Bucky, Buck) New Harris, Jr., 86 of Boise, Idaho passed away on January 12, 2014. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, friend, teacher, coach, athlete, and outdoorsman. His upbeat personality and sense of humor will be especially remembered and missed. Buck was born in Norfolk, Virginia on July 31, 1927 to the late Buckner New Harris and Edna Lee Riddick. Buck had two older sisters, Jane (Phil) Landvogt and Katy (Bob) Gardner who preceded him in death. When Buck's father, a career Naval officer, was transferred to the Long Beach Naval base in 1932, his life in Southern California began. Buck attended school in Long Beach, graduated from Wilson High School in 1945 and immediately joined the Navy. He served for 16 months at the end of WWII and then attended Whittier College where he played football, earning All-West Coast honors as a halfback. He graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. While attending college Buck met his wife of 62 years, Janet Blanchard Kluger. In 1957, he received a Master's of Art in Education from Cal State University at Long Beach (formerly Long Beach State College). Buck was a teacher and coach in the Long Beach Unified School District for 36 years, retiring in 1987 after teaching/coaching for 33 years at Millikan High School. He had fond memories of his students, fellow coaches and Millikan's CIF championships in baseball, basketball, football, track and cross country. Many of Buck's lifelong friends were made during his teaching career. Being an educator with time off in the summer allowed Buck to experience as rich a life as one can have- not only in terms of pursuing his passions of fly fishing and tennis, but in allowing the family the opportunity to share wonderful experiences together- summers on the beach while Buck lifeguarded for the City of Long Beach, body surfing, camping, fishing and many other activities which made lasting impressions on the entire family. After retiring from teaching, Buck and Janet moved to Boise, Idaho to be closer to family and to the Madison River Valley in Montana, where until a few years ago they spent every summer fly fishing, playing tennis, golfing and hiking. Buck spent countless hours wading and floating the Madison River catching and releasing the famous Rainbows and Browns of the Madison. It was widely believed that Buck caught every Brown trout between Quake Lake and Ennis by the time his trips to Montana ended. His dear friend Jon Meyer might argue that point, also claiming to have caught them all. Both are likely true. Buck and Janet made many wonderful friends during their summers in Montana. When summer ended, they returned to Boise where they continued to play tennis through the winter. They were long-time members of the Boise Racquet and Swim Club and enjoyed their many friends there. Buck is survived by his wife Janet and three children: Judy Cole (Don) of Newport Beach, CA, Buck (A) Harris (Julie) of Boise, ID, and Gail Burtch (Bob) of Boise, Idaho. He is also survived 6 grandchildren: Rob Polowski, Erin Fuss(Creighton), Buck (J) Harris, Katharine Harris, Cameron Long, Brock Harris and 3 great grandchildren: Alex Polowski, Ashlyn Fuss and Carter Fuss. Memorial contributions can be made in his name to the Idaho Food Bank at Idahofoodbank.org. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, January 19, 2014, at Plantation Country Club, 6515 W. State St., Boise, Idaho from 4pm to 7pm. Please sign the guestbook at www.presstelegram.com/obits.

Coach Dick DeHaven

October 2015

LONG BEACH >> The Long Beach football community lost a legend on Sunday with the passing of Dick DeHaven. He was 78.

DeHaven took over a relatively unsuccessful Millikan High football program in the 1970s and turned it around with a modified two-back veer offense that took advantage of the Rams’ speed. Prior to 1977, Millikan hadn’t won a CIF playoff game. DeHaven led the Rams to two CIF Coastal championships in 1977 and 1979.

“He’s the greatest high school in-game football coach ever,” said Dave Radford, who played and coached at Millikan with DeHaven.

Both DeHaven and Radford were on campus in 2009 to celebrate the 30-year anniversary of the ’79 championship. That night, the Rams upset Poly in double overtime, 35-34.

“He had the gift of understanding and inspiring young players to perform at the maximum of their ability,” Radford said. “(DeHaven) was all about faith, family, friends and football. In that order.”

Some Millikan football alumni have already begun organizing a proposal to name the Millikan High stadium after DeHaven. Lakewood High did the same for legendary coach John Ford.

“Every school has it’s guy, the coach who sets the standard in their sport and Dick DeHaven is the standard for football coaches at Millikan,” said Kirk Diego, who coached at Millikan from 2001-2011. “He was on the committee that selected me as head coach and I was humbled then and always took satisfaction knowing that the legend, coach DeHaven, had given me his seal of approval to carry the Millikan football torch.”

The DeHaven family is planning a celebration of life ceremony in December.
