With the rank of Private First Class in the United States Army, John served as a Wireman with the 34th Engineer Battalion [Construction],
attached to the 159th Engineer Group Headquarters at Bien Hoa, the Republic of Vietnam.

He received the Purple Heart in April 1968 for wounds suffered in the line of duty.
