Wow, great story, Margo.  Doug introduced me to my first "cigarette". I don't know where he came up with this idea, but we were in I think the 4th grade and he suggested we go over under one of the Eucalyptus trees during recess at Emerson -- the ones along Palo Verde, at the far end of the playground.  Then, he pulls out a dried, hollow horsetail (a plant, genus Equisitum I learned later) that was about the length of a cigarette.  He then crushed some dried Eucallyptus leaves and began stuffing them into the horsetail.  He lit it up and we passed it back and forth during recess.  A foretelling of times to come, unbeknownst to both of us?  Anyway, although I did on other occasions hang around with Doug, it's that one that stays with me.
