Shirley and I were good friends, but I hadn't seen her for a while after she got married and moved to Hollywood.  When her husband was sent to Vietnam, she moved home to Long Beach again and we were starting to hang out together sometimes.  The day of the car accident she had gone with the guy who was driving the car to pick up a puppy.  I called to see if she wanted to go to the movies that evening, and her mom answered the phone and told me Shirley had just been killed in a car accident, the police had just arrived at her house to inform her.  I'm not sure why she even answered the phone, but she was probably in shock.  I didn't know what to say except, "I'm sorry.  I'm so, so sorry!"  I cried for what seemed like days afterward.  I was the first person other than her mom to find out about her death.  I have never, and will never forget my friend Shirley.  She was one of the sweetest people in the world, and we had so much fun and many laughs together.  It's such a tragedy that she was taken from us so young.  :'(  Rest in eternal peace, Shirley.
