If you didn't know Rich intimately, you probably never saw the other side of the high school wildman and prankster persona you remember.  What’s tragic, to me, moreover, is not just that Rich died young; but the fact that he never had the chance to contradict the image you may  have formed of him at Millikan.

Rich felt deeply. And his loyalty to the people he regarded as true friends knew no bounds. He was generous. And he  could be extraordinarily kind, especially to those he perceived to be in pain.

He was smart and insightful. And words he coined like "Buddy Roll" ( people who acted as if they were friends until you really needed them) are still a part of my vocabulary.

Rich enlisted in the Army, becoming a Green Beret and Medic, decorated for his service in Vietnam. He planned to pursue medicine and I have no doubt that he would have achieved his goal to help others had he lived.

Rich thrived on camaradie and was no stranger to risk. Both contributed to the car accident that took his life.

In the pantheon of memorable people in my life, Rich holds a very special place. I am old but Rich, in my memory, is forever young. I miss his friendship to this day.
