Subject 45 lessons

Written by Regina Brett, 90 years old, of The Plain Dealer, Cleveland , Ohio "To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me. It is the most-requested column I've ever written.

My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more:

1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.

3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch.

5. Pay off your credit cards every month.

6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.

8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.

9. Save for retirement starting with your first pay check.

10 When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.

11 Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.

12 It's OK to let your children see you cry.

13 Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

14 If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.

15 Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks.

16 Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.

17 Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.

18 Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.

19 It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else.

20 When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.

21 Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, and wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion.

Today is special.

22 Over prepare, then go with the flow.

23 Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.

24 The most important sex organ is the brain.

25 No one is in charge of your happiness but you.

26 Frame every so-called disaster with these words 'In five years, will this matter?'

27 Always choose life.

28 Forgive everyone everything.

29 What other people think of you is none of your business.

30 Time heals almost everything. Give time.

31 However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

32 Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

33 Believe in miracles.

34 God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do.

35 Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.

36 Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young.

37 Your children get only one childhood.

38 All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.

39 Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.

40 If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back.

41 Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

42 The best is yet to come.

43 No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

44 Yield

45 Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift."

lisa, how true it is thanks for reminding us. we only get this one life, and we get to choose every day how to live it. we cant let the past, or future, get in the way of the present.

Thanks everyone for a wonderful week of vacation. Never long enough, but enjoyed all that we did. Thanks for making time for me and Spencer.

Kristie, thanks for letting me play Bunco in your place. It was fun and unexpected.

David, sorry I didn't get to see you more. I love you very much.

Love to all.

Down on the River in the late sunshine Finished for the day, but the boat let out a whine Called for the Donn and Debi came too Pulled us slowly back to Prospect as we needed them to do. Can't say why For Sail did not get up and go She's been resting peaceful-like, waiting for a show After getting out that day with the girls and boys She decides that we may want to play with other toys. Donn dragged us to dockside tied to a yellow rope Late afternoon on the River, he was our only hope. Back along to dock, Alec and Aidan by his side. Laughing and giggling, the adventure was a great ride. Thank you for assistance, Donn. Thank you for the tow We hope to never have to call twice in a row. You're always there for us and we'll be there for you. Let's hope it's just for fun and games..no more rescue! Your help deserved more than a mere thank you. Her girls are helping to pack holes of infection, but Cathy is in much much pain. Pray Pray Pray for her. ALSO...Jim goes to specialist today. Please pray doctors can find and know what is wrong and can fix it easily. Please stop what you are doing right now and say a prayer for Cathy and Jim now while it is fresh on your mind, also a prayer of thanksgiving for Mickey!! I love you all~SmileyCentral.comSmileyCentral.comSmileyCentral.comSmileyCentral.comSmileyCentral.comSmileyCentral.comSmileyCentral.comSmileyCentral.com

i have also prayed for susan, cathy, and jim. and sent many thankful prayers for my dad.
i just want to say, that zack spent the night the other night, and he is really a funny kid. i am thankful for my wonderful boys, and that lisa has zack so they have a good friend growing up.
lisa we are very lucky to have good boys, they are smartasses, and not very good in the kitchen, but i would rather laugh with them, than have to cry for them. anyway i really enjoyed having him, and am glad that they are close.

Family: SmileyCentral.comPeople do get on here! It is a live and viable entity. We just thought it was dead. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. It has been a rough week, but Susan now has a job and I think it is where God has led her. Faith. Hope. But the waiting was excruciating. Jim's heart tests came out positively the best they could! Some shadow on the diaphragm caused the scare. We are so relieved, but he wanted to keep it low key so most of you knew nothing about it. He does have some ulcers that need attention, but he has been through that before. Piece of cake!SmileyCentral.com Time to pray for Sherri and Nick, too. Sherri has an incredibly painful outbreak of shingles in her head and down the side of her face over her ear. The doctor is worried about inner ear infection and her hearing. He gave her meds, $30 a pill, three times a day, and her insurance doesn't pay but 10%. She is to take them for 10 days. SmileyCentral.com Thankfully, he gave her pain meds, too. GO TO BED AND REST, SHERRI. The world will go on without you for a day or two! Nick filed papers for custody of NicholasSmileyCentral.com and when they served "what's her name" she stole the baby from the day care and says she is not giving him back. I know the baby has to be terrorized because he hates to even see her. Prayers, prayers, prayers. CAN GOD JUST KEEP US ON SPEED DIAL?SmileyCentral.com Never in my life can I remember a time that I prayed so hard and so often and for my family. It was always for others. Go figure. Now, God, don't hold out on me, don't hold back your passion. Your love and truth are all that keeps me together. Psalm 40:11 (July 17: Perpetual Calendar)

Jen I am glad they are close also . I am glad he shares his humor with you , he gets that from me. He finds me very amusing at times . Ask him about it.

Susan I have already told you congrats but I will say it again ! You go girl!! I loved the story you sent me ,it was great.

Debi ,Tori is driving me crazy because you still havent called her.

Sherri is stubborn and wont take the pain meds because they make her sick . I told her to get the doc to order some pheagran and then she will defineatly sleep.

lots of prayers for sherry, nick, and nicholas. its hard to understand how parents can be so cruel, if all parents would just do the right thing for their kids this world would be so much better.
congratulations susan, where is your new job?
the movie was great, we saw ice age. the girl said she was there, but kyle could not find her. he broke up with her shortly after because they never hung out. kyle is now in florida with his grandparents, he went fishing today and to the pool.

Sherri is miserable!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Look like a disfigured monster. Right side of my face, neck, shoulder, ear -- nothing but rash and blisters...

Tell Mom to get the shingles shot. No one would ever understand the pain and misery. Monster headache, earache, stabbing in the head, itching, burning.

Nick is sad, sad, sad. Nicholas is probably worse. Will try to get him back on Monday, but the good thing is that he should not be around me while I have shingles.

Life is going on without me because I can barely get out of bed. Got a new pain prescription and cannot live without it. Hanging in there, but am very frustrated. Trying not to have Ramsey Hunt Syndrome, which is loss of movement in my facial muscles. Every once in awhile, I have a twitch by my lip, but am staying positive that the medicine will help fast.

Love to all.

Sherri

Justice,
God bless you and your family. So sorry about your mother. I remember you talking about her when I met you last winter.
Share the good memories of her with your children.

Vicki

You will not get the Ramsey Syndrome BECAUSE you are staying in bed and worrying about NOTHING and letting the WORLD take care of itself for a change.

YOU NEED TO DO NOTHING BUT REST, REST, AND REST.

...and take your meds.

Love you so much.
