Martha Louise Armstrong

April 10, 1945 – August 6, 2024

Martha Louise Armstrong (“Martye”) passed away on August 6, 2024, in her home in Houston, Texas. Born to Martha and Gilbert Armstrong on April 10, 1945, in Jacksonville, Florida (Duvall County), she was a loving, caring, compassionate and beloved mother, sister, daughter, grandmother, aunt and friend.

Martha was a cherished member of the Armstrong family, adoring sister to Charles Gilbert Armstrong (Susan) of Medina, Washington, devoted and loving mother to Mary Leighton (“Molly”) LaFuze Whiles (Jason) of Houston, Texas, and Elizabeth (“Betsy”) LaFuze Gill (Thomas) of Knoxville, Tennessee, proud grandmother to Wilson Whiles, Dexter Whiles, Clara Whiles and Everett Whiles, all of Houston, Texas, and to Melissa Gill and Joshua Gill of Knoxville, Tennessee, as well as doting aunt to Susan Dorsey Armstrong (Ryan Schneider) of West Lafayette, Indiana, Katherine Armstrong Hochstetler (Mark) of Menlo Park, California, and Charles Monroe Armstrong of Brooklyn, New York.

Martha was a graduate of Waggener High School in Louisville, Kentucky, Ohio Wesleyan University (Bachelor of Science, English and Secondary Education), and after staying home to raise her daughters, she was a graduate of Sam Houston State University (Masters of Library Science). She worked in the Governor’s Office in Austin, Texas, 1971-1973 and as the Library Media Specialist at Northbrook Middle School, Spring Branch I.S.D., 1991-2009.

Martha was actively involved in the Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church community including Bible studies and weekly knitting ministry, Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and Alumnae Association, Heritage Society, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Guild and book club and National Society of Colonial Dames of America (NSCDA) including being on the Board of Managers and Patriotic Service Co-Chair of the Texas Society of the NSCDA. Other interests included reading, traveling, bridge, genealogy, and Heisey glass.

‍Predeceased by her parents, Martha’s memory will be cherished and kept alive by her brother, children, grandchildren, nieces and nephew, and a community that was blessed by her presence.

Services to honor and celebrate the life of Martha Louise Armstrong will be conducted by Pastor Beth Case and held on August 24, 2024, at 10:00 A.M. in the Sanctuary at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, located at 11612 Memorial Dr., Houston, Texas 77024. A reception will be held in the lobby immediately following the service. Martha’s ashes will be laid to rest in the MDPC Columbarium prior to the service in a private family ceremony. Ceremony will be livestreamed at OnlineMemorials.mdpc.org. The service will also be recorded and put on the website at MemorialsArchive.mdpc.org. For those coming to the service who have mobility issues, please turn into parking lot G of the church from Memorial Dr. for access to handicapped parking spots.

Martha Armstrong will be profoundly missed by those who knew and loved her, though we rejoice for her that she is now living free of burdens and without pain in Heaven with Jesus.

Every time I drive psst Martha and Chucks house on Chenoworth I think of her. She was a good caring person.

Martye was a regular on our Zoom sessions and we are all mourning this loss. Farewell old friend, be at peace.
