I last spoke with Brunilda a few years ago before our last reunion. She was still in the Louisville area but had been battling some health issues. We laughed a bit remembering one day during practice in the run-up to the big day of the annual Junior-Senior Girl's Football Game. I was the quarterback and Brunilda was our defensive center and so in practice we were lined up across from each other, with only the offensive center (I can't remember who) between us. We got in formation, I called a play and before the ball was even snapped, the offensive center was flat on the ground and so was I. Wow. Brunilda was doing her job! I got up, dusted myself off and called another play. Same result. After the third try I limped over to the sidelines and demanded to know from our "coaches" (who seemed quite pleased with themselves) what the heck was going on (more laughing and giggling). Finally, Richard Dicter confessed that he thought, given her size, Brunilda was not trying hard enough, so he told her that I had said some mean things about her and that she should teach me a lesson. Which she did. Of course, I never said those things but, looking back, I know that if I had been a better friend she never would have believed Richard.
I just did a quick look at our class In Memoriam page and realize that we've lost fully 25% of our class. Do I owe anyone else an apology?
