Notes from the Con Call on 9/13/09

Attendees

Cathie F - doing a lot of work for us

Shirley Fille - we just found her in Flagstaff!

Karin Stewart - finally made it to a call;  working hard to find missing classmates

Linda Brown - reconnecting in LA

We are zeroing in on 2 dates in 2010.  Look for a class poll/survey to help us decide - or put your comments here.

June 11, 12, 13

June 25, 26, 27

June 20 is Father's Day so we thought that would not work.

June weather: avg hi/lo temp 83/62

Here are notes and the ideas so far:

Everyone try to stay at the same hotel:  Crown Plaza, Cathie says would work well for $100/night.  The idea would be to try to stay close to Madeira so we are not spending hours driving around everywhere.

Coney, Cruises and far away places might be fun but I personally don't want to drive around very much.  But if we want to do that, that's fine, too.

Some people say restaurants would only have us for about 2 hours so that might not work as a way to make lots of time for uninterrupted talking,  We need a place from 6 PM to midnight on Friday night, for example.

However a nice dinner in nice restaurant would work OK too -  if we could have the place for drinks, dinner, and then milling around all after dinner.

We should be able to find a venue ( a funky little place - maybe we rent the CityView Tavern or Madeira Inn or someplace like that) - some place that serves drinks and might let us have a meal or just a lot of finger foods catered.   Hotels seem to sterile for me (just my opinion).

Thursday evening:  informal get together

Friday during the day:  at the school.  People bring memorabilia, slides, music, whatever.

Friday night:  dinner, etc for the whole evening - not to far away

Saturday:  one idea would be  to go to Barb Query's low key golf club

http://www.belwoodcc.com/fw/main/Home-1.html

and hang around all day - play golf, swim, do a cookout on the deck late afternoon, play a party game, tell stories, make speeches, have a contest, give awards.  I think Barb does not want to organize all the food and stuff but the place might work if we get volunteers to do that.   Its 20 miles / 30 minutes from Madeira.

Sunday:  brunch at the hotel

So, there it is.  Watch for emails and a poll.

Hi all!

Sorry that I missed the calls....want to bring you up to date on Belwood.  We only have the 19th and the 26th dates available in June at this point.  Obviously, it is a big wedding month....there is also a tentative booking on the 26th......I guess when I offered the club, I should have checked sooner....but I didn't want to push it too hard and force it on everyone.  I didn't realize Father's day was that weekend either.  I feel terrible because our facility would work if we could get the right date.  Would Friday night be impossible?   Are we definitely set on June?  I will know at the end of this week, if this bride commits to June 26.

Regarding the food, we have a full service kitchen and could easily provide any type of meal...cookout....hors d'oeuvres.  When I spoke with Cathie Friedrichs, I was just being wimpy about being responsible for it.  My luck, the electric would go out, our chef would quit that day or some other catastrophe would occur to embarrass me in front of all of my classmates!

I am open to suggestions.....it would really help to know how many people would definitely  commit to coming.  If I block out a date in the ballroom in June on a Saturday night and we only have 50 people.....might not be worth it.  I hope you understand.   Golf and the pool are always available and the pool deck......just concerned if the weather doesn't cooperate!

Barb

Thanks for your ideas and feedback.  Planning for something like this is always uncertain.  It will probably take until January or February to get an accurate count of committed attendees.   When we do, I am sure we can figure out a good place.

I think June or July would give the greatest chance of the greatest number being able to attend.  Pick a date - if people want to be there, they'll find a way!

Nice addition to your profile, Larry.  Loved the back flip and the flexible reference.  Reminds me of what my 80-year-old friend told me when I teased him about turning 80.  He said "Let me tell you what it's like to get old, Jim.  Everything that's supposed to be flexible is stiff, and everything that's supposed to be stiff is flexible!"

I can hardly wait!  NOT!!!

Hi all,

Just a reminder that we had a son graduate from HS last June 13th. Perhaps there are those among ye with children on the cusp of a graduation. Would it work better if I said grand children? Let's not push too close to that important time of the year for some. I so look forward to this!

Hi, Barb,

Just checking in about your response of availability ... can two events be held at Belwood simultaneously, one large, one smaller? I cannot remember the layout; you mentioned an area can be blocked off not a large crowd.  Of course all groups would appreciate access to the patio, deck, etc., would those be shared areas if more than one party?

If any available date could be agreeable to most, I think we should try to get a rough count on how many of us plan to attend.

Cathie

Here's another vote for June 25, 26, 27th.................

I can also offer a free room with two twin beds and private bath for anyone wishing to contact me ahead of time.

I agree with Jim Woehr ... pick date(s) that work for facilities and activities far enough in advance and those that want to attend will find a way!!

I plan on attending, that's for sure!!!

If you all are interested in spending some time at Belwood, I think Friday would be the best bet for the weekend of June 25,26,27.  We could have golf and swimming in the afternoon and then move inside for cocktail hour.....dinner & reminiscing.....etc.

I still think a river cruise would be nice on Saturday night....Dona Ayers Brock has info on a smaller boat that we could reserve.  Coney Island might be fun too.

Are we trying to involve other classes?  If so, that would help with numbers and make it more reasonable for me to block out Saturday night in the ballroom at Belwood.  If the ballroom is booked for a reception, we could accommodate about 60 people in the members' grille.  More, if we can be outside.  Too bad we can't always count on Cincinnati weather!

I really like Barb's suggestion of a river boat cruise.  For me, at least, the main point of attending would be to spend time in conversation with classmates, to get reaquainted.  A cruise would facilitate that in a relaxing environment.  I'm not excited about golf or similar activities that would severely limit opportunities for conversation with more than a few people.

I think Jim brings up a good point; conversation amongst the masses so we can reconnect. Golfing and other activities is fine for those who want to partake but it would be missing the point on the "reunion" idea. However, the logistics of spending an "entire" weekend ALL together is probably not feasible either nor would we want to be couped up in one area the entire weekend.

Could we maybe come up with some ideas which would marry the two(or more)? Maybe set aside some time whining and dinning in mass with room to visit tables for conversation amongst the many. BUT could we also have some common activities planned and available to go off in groups? I think a general mix would be good.

My suggestion would be to treat it like a convention; a general meeting room where we could all gather for wine, spirits, and dinner, and then have so called "clinics" whether it be golf, swimming, or lectures about a particular interesting topic anyone may have experienced, or even a topic someone may be passionate about. I'm sure that Larry would love to present a lecture on his "electric" car and how he got there. I could do a visual presentation on Antarctica, China, or anywhere odd and interesting that I visited. Karin could present her experiences with the circus. ANYTHING that someone may have interesting to share with a small group that they are passionate about. This way we could pick and choose what we want to hear or experience AFTER a common activity.

Any ideas or suggestions as to what you could contribute?

Larry-the June 25,26,27 works for me.  I think Ferrari's or Maggiano's would be fine (and near-by) .  Barb-thanks for the offer of Belwood.  It's lovely without being pretentious and would be comfortable for all of us.  I think time is a great equalizer and at our age, we don't need to impress anyone!! Besides, anyone who had money, probably doesn't  have near as much as they did! I think the pig roast for Sat., would be really fun (and tasty!)  I think the river cruise is a littrle pricey (and far away from our venue)  Just some thoughts...... talk to you later.  I won't be available for the next conf. call, but will catch up from Cathie.  Thanks ! The Reunion will be June 25-27, 2010
Posted Sunday, September 27, 2009 08:23 PM

OK.  We have picked the date.

Based on the emails and web forum topic responses

The date of June 25, 26, and 27, 2010 will be the date for our reunion!

Its only 271 days to go.  Be prepared to enter the Twilight Zone!

Get your gym memberships, exercise classes, diets, hair color appointments, teeth whitening kits ready to go  (except for Jimbo....who seems to have aged thinly , wine and all  )

And, get your plane or train tickets right away.

Early arrivers and locals can get together informally Thursday night June 24.,  Then,  there will be a well organized set of cool stuff to do Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning with plenty of free time to mingle with all tREhe people you loved, hated or felt insecure about, 46 years ago.

Somehow we need to incorporate a Skyline and Graeter's "fix" for our out-of-towners!!!

I think we should get Skyline to cater one of our lunches!
