Ron's Latest Interactions
i wrote this item, and it was posted on the memory board of the funeral home thar handled Robert's service:
Our friendship evolved in Madisonville High when he had a car and I didn’t. We twice went out of town and unsuccessfully tried our hand at tests for military schools. I’m not sure why.
When the class of '59 moved on, We became room mates at Western Kentucky and would frequently hang out with other students from Madisonville. It was not unusual for him to pick up the tab at dinner and he never pressured me to pay.
After finishing studies at Western, I came to Florida, where a journalism job was waiting. Because that was before Internet days, we didn’t get to communicate much. But in recent years, we frequently exchanged emails and a few phone calls, most recently about two or three months ago.
We always agreed on politics . . . . . and he enjoyed the nickname (T Rump) I used for the most recent GOP president. Because of my journalism career, he he would ask my opinion or advice on what he was working on. I never had to recommend changes, and I hope the book on his mother still makes it into print.
Everyone of his post-college accomplishments came as a pleasant surprise because they came in career areas he never mentioned in our pre-profession days.
My latest visit with Robert was three or four years ago when a sports writer friend and I were in Lexington. When Keeneland closed for the day, we met Robert for dinner at a restaurant he chose. My friend occasionally mentions that trip and always has some comment about how Robert And I recalled the good old past. I kidded Robert about how much I still owed him from our Western Kentucky days.
Just like the old days, Robert insisted on paying the tab. He was a person who can never be forgotten.
