Sad to hear about Tom today. I'm sorry to say that I have had little recent contact with him thou he was my best friend in high school. I spent many hour plus calls with him on the phone. I have no idea what we talked about.
I moved to California in 1970 so that lessened my contact with you all. Thou I recently had lunch with Henrik, now using his middle name Paul, Hirshman. He lives in Southern CA and was visiting a son in Northern CA.
Condolences to Tom's family--I remember Tom and I being on a trivia panel during an assembly during junior high in that we were both in the Honor Society--I have always respected his active role in civic affairs which began at Malverne High and continued on into honorably serving Nassau County--his imprint on us all will be everlasting--Sincerely--Bonita Sanabria
I went from K thru 12 with Tom, and our parents were friends. I tried to give him a call whenever we would visit my family in Lynbrook. (My mom, 99, is still in our house, and attended his wake with my two sisters.) The last time I spoke to Tom, was when he called me after he heard of my husband, Wayne’s passing. We all had such fun together at our 50th reunion, and his call meant a lot to me. He certainly lived a life of service and my heart goes out to his family in this time of grief and unimaginable loss.
Tom and I also went to school together from Kindergarten to Grade 12. In my career as a commercial banker on Long Island I ran into Tom on many occasions. He succeeded my father as Town of Hempstead Supervisor and Nassau County Executive. The last time I saw him was at my father's funeral mass in Malverne in 2014. He joins a growing list of our former schoolmates who have passed. Hope to see them all again!
I also shared classes with Tom from Kindergarten (where we had adjacent rugs at nap time). I still remember the many birthday parties and the visit to his Dad's office in the fourth grade.
I rarely see my MHS classmates as I have lived in CA for more than 40 years ago, but I was fortunate enough to set up a meeting with Tom a few years ago when I was on Long Island to show one my sons where I grew up. He was, as always, gracious and fun to be with. I think we all know how much he will be missed. An admirable classmate and an admirable man.
When I arrived at MHS as a Freshman, Tom was already the class leader. He remained a leader his whole adult life, always carrying himself with dignity and kindness. May Tom's family and friends find solace together.
