Ed was a wonderful friend to me for all of his life. He was a man of principle. He had a wonderful sense of humor. I do not understand why he left us so soon.
Ed was a friend and neighbor beginning in 1963 when his family moved into their new house behind our house. I spend a lot of time at the Thomas' house, and Ed and his brother Larry at my house (Larry broke his arm riding a skate board at my house). I remember that Ed read a lot and was very smart. I used to get rides to school with Ed and his mom.
I seem to remember telling Ed once that his Mom's English class at Marsteller was tough and his mom strict, and he told me that maybe I'd remember some of that things we learned. To this day, I still remember some of the grammer Mrs. Thomas taught us (over and over until we got it right), and to this day, I still use some of what she taught us.
I miss Ed, deeply and regret not having the opportunity to say 'good-bye.' Because both our mothers and fathers were educators, Ed and I were together often throughout our childhood and school years. In my heart of hearts, I believe my folks wanted Ed and I to marry! Ed was my date for freshman Home Coming and also my date for senior Prom. When he was at UVA and I was at Radford, we still communicated. The last time I saw Ed was over a Christmas visit after I married David Croson. I think Ed represented my connection to childhood and the good 'ole days. Ed was a good egg! Robbie Leo Arnold
