I grew up with Mike on Huse Road. We'd all spend the summer playing kickball in each other's yards, swim in a neighbor's pool, ride bikes. I heard of Mike's death on an early morning news report on my radio alarm on Valentine's Day, 1989. I sat bolt upright and shouted, "What?" Awful news to wake up to, losing a childhood friend! I remember being annoyed at the radio reporter because he kept mispronouncing Prokopik, and also because the story was reported from the angle that focused more on the point that this car accident was the second that occurred on Huse Road within a short amount of time that winter, and less on the fact that someone had lost his life. What makes Mike's death doubly tragic is that his accident happened just a few houses away from his mother's house, which, I believe, was his destination.
