By substantially reducing its volume of adult materials within in one week of a contempt of court ruling on March 1, the Mandan Bookstore at 116 East Main St. has avoided the label “adult bookstore” and has received a $1,750 fine, suspended, as long as the business continues to comply with the Mandan City Zoning Ordinance. The determination that The Bookstore of Mandan, operated by Mi-Jon News, Inc., has complied to the Zoning Ordinance and is now “legal,” was made by South Central District Court Justice Dennis Schneider, who made his decision based on testimony by Bob Miller, bookstore manager, and the Mandan Building Inspector.

The Mandan Future Farmers of America livestock judging team of Dean Breuer, Gail Madler and David Stastny have been awarded first place overall honors at the North Dakota Winter Show in Valley City. The trio competed against 68 other FFA teams from schools throughout the state. It’s the fourth consecutive year that a Mandan FFA team has won this event. Coaches for the judging team were: Dwight Keller and Richard C. Tokach, with Al Liebersbach as the FFA advisor.

Troy Vredenburg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ron Vredenburg, of Mandan, is a recipient of a $2,500 Presidential Laureate scholarship for outstanding leadership from Mary College, Bismarck. The award recognizes 25 incoming freshmen for their leadership abilities, based on academics and school activities. Vredenburg is a senior at Mandan High School, is the class president, plays varsity tennis and golf and is a Mandan Tennis Program Instructor.

The Board of Directors of Mandan Hospital has appointed William Remmich as interim Administrator. This move was prompted by the resignation of Hospital Administrator Gerald Heuer, who accepted a position in Aberdeen, S.D., as the manager of the Family Health Center. Remmich has been a controller with the hospital since 1980.

The Mandan High School Speech Team, coached by Pat Pins, capped off a winning season by placing second in the State Tournament held in Grand Forks, with Jason Bender earning state champion honors in persuasive speaking. “Will Marina Bay Float?” is the headline in this week’s Mandan News, as citizens’ concerns regarding river congestion and annexation spark the opposition against the Marina Bay project at park board and city commission meetings. According to Marina Bay developer Vince Young, the 88-acre new subdivision, aimed at recreation and luxury housing, will include 30-plus residential lots, cluster housing, a public marina and a commercial area, all backed into a man-made lake just yards from the Missouri River.

But before construction can begin, the subdivision needs access to city water and sewer, which would mean crossing over adjacent landowners’ property. However, these landowners are against annexation; they do not wish to pay taxes to the city. And, according to several residents living next to the river, the 5-mile stretch of the Missouri River between Mandan and Bismarck is already extremely busy and dangerous. “We don’t need more boats on the river,” said a landowner.

The pros and cons were debated before numerous meetings of the Mandan Planning and Zoning Commission, chaired by Ken Lohstreter. Finally, zoning changes, from flood plain agricultural to residential and commercial, were approved, 7-3. Voting in favor were Esther Davis, Don Koch, Marvin Miller, Brad Charnholm, Sharon Schafer, Richard Gallagher and Tom Little. Voting “no” were Ray Knoll, Ken Lohstreter and Robert Leingang.

With that vote in his favor, Young approached the city commission and formally requested annexation of the property and the installation of sewer and water lines, plus utilities, to be in place by Sept. 30, 1985. But, in yet another delay, the commission refused further action until the annexation process begins and a response is received from the U.S. Corps of Engineers for dredging a channel from the river to the marina.

The Mandan High School Junior-Senior prom and banquet was held April 20. The banquet was served at the Mandan Elks building, with the junior class president Barry Stein introducing the evening’s speaker, MHS English teacher Vicki Roehl. Following the meal, students gathered at the high school gym for the Grand March, led by Stein and his date, Terri Baldwin, followed by the senior class president, Troy Vredenburg, and his date, Marcie McDowell. This year’s prom theme was “We never really say goodbye.” Dance music was furnished by the band, “Legacy.”

Mandan’s J.C. Penney’s store is set close on April 27. According to manager Don Craft, the proximity of a second Penney’s store in Bismarck, coupled with the opening of the new Missouri River bridge that has cut down on the driving time to south Bismarck, was a factor in the economic decision for the closure. Besides Craft, there are seven employees in the Mandan store. The J.C. Penney’s store first opened in Mandan in 1920 at 216 W. Main St. before moving to its current location in 1937.
