Michael was born March 30, 1967 in Mandan to Thornton and Caroline (Hoerner)
Kilen.  Raised and educated in Mandan he was active in swimming, choir, and
played the keyboard at St. Joseph Church.  Michael graduated from Mandan High
School and went on to the University of North Dakota, receiving his nursing
degree in December of 1989.  He moved to Chicago where he worked at the
University of Illinois Medical Center.  Dedicated to his work and those he cared
for, Michael often worked holidays so co-workers could spend time with their
families.  He became the manager of Nursing and Administrative Services where he
worked until his illness.

Best remembered as a true friend, Michael lived life to the fullest.  He enjoyed
traveling, attending musicals, and fishing.  Walks to Lake Michigan were a
source of peace and relaxation for him.  A talented cook, Michael made wonderful
bread pudding and was always generous to share his dishes with friends.  Home
canned tomatoes were a treat and he would always take home Cloverdale summer
sausage after a trip back from ND.  Family was an important source of strength
and comfort to Michael.  Regular phone calls kept him up to date with all the
news from home.  His enduring strength and courage and his love of life and
people touched the lives of all who knew him.

Michael leaves a loving family including his parents, Thornton and Caroline
Kilen, Mandan; two sisters, Brenda (Brian) Barbour, Boise, ID and Lori (Joseph)
