Michael Dale Mackan, MD, FACEP, age 64, died on Sunday, November 6, 2011 at Allay Senior Care, Canton, Ohio. He was born to Edgar Dale and Betty Lee (Hull) Mackan in Marion, Ohio, on June 3, 1947. He attended St. Mary, Marion, Mt. St. Francis High School, Indiana, St. Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri, and The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. He graduated from OSU's College of Medicine in 1975. From 1976 to 1978 he was a Medical Officer with the US Naval Medical Corps where he was stationed with the Naval Construction Forces, Indian Ocean; and the Atlantic Alert Battalion, Europe. He was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal and the Naval Expeditionary Medal and was a member of the Seabees, Battalion 1313. He completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at Akron City Hospital where he went on to become the Chief Resident; he received the "Hoyt Award" for best research co-author; and in 1980, he received the "Teacher of the Year Award, Residency Program". He worked as an Emergency Medicine attending physician at both Akron City and St. Thomas Hospitals until his retirement in 2006. He was a Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine at NEOUCOM. He also had been a board member of Akron's Community Drug Board Foundation, the American Heart Association, Ohio ACEP, and a chairperson for the Regional Physician Advisory Board, Region VIII. He was proud to have co-chaired the committee to develop the Trauma Triage protocols for the State of Ohio. The Ohio Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians named him "Emergency Room Physician of the year" in 1993 and awarded him the "Bill Hall Award for Service" in 2006. He loved teaching all levels of EMS providers, and was the medical director for numerous local fire departments and ambulance services in Summit County. He served as team pyhsician at St. Vincent St. Mary High School in Akron. He was an OSU, Cleveland Browns and Kentucky Derby fanatic. He is survived by daughters, Megan Mackan of Canal Fulton and Bethany Mackan of Canal Fulton; mother, Betty Mackan; sisters, Teresa (Barry) Hazlett and Mary Mackan both of Marion; brothers, James (Virgia) Mackan, of Logan, Ohio, Timothy (Connie) Mackan of Grove City, Ohio, Christopher Mackan of Columbus, Ohio; fiancé, Kay Castaldo of Philadelphia, PA and many nieces and nephews. Mike never knew a stranger and will be missed by many dear friends and colleagues. He was preceded in death by his father, Edgar Dale Mackan and sister, Patricia Mackan Klein of Delaware, Ohio and a son, Jason Mackan. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2011 in the Reed Funeral Home North Canton Chapel (801 Pittsburg Ave. NW) from 2 to 4 pm with funeral services to follow at 4:00 pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, November 14, 2011 at 10:30 am in the St. Mary's Catholic Church, 251 N. Main St. Marion, Ohio with Fr. Michael Nimocks celebrant. Burial with military honors will follow in the Marion Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society, c/o Mary Churh, 251 N.
