Jay I remember when Henning flipped out on the bus on the way to wrestle in Waterloo. Guess he didn't like that playboy you were thumbing through.

Jay, must be having a senior moment....don't remember that but it doesn't surprise me....Phil wasn't that much older than us, he was probably jamming to that when he got home! Has anyone seen Phil lately...would love to pop in on him while in town.

Lane, I was at the KISS concert as well with Rick Rogers, Sommerlot and others.....another senior moment. I remember Rick buying a BUICK over the rail of the balcony onto someones head down below!

Best concert in high school for me was a road trip to Chicago to see Bob Seger with Sommerlot, Cyndi Whitehill and Marie Maertens. Five hours of partying each way and a great show!

OMG - Bob Segar in Chicago? How did we survive those years?

'79 Iowa Jam was a memorable one too. Segar, Rod Stewart, and, many more but can't remember, hmm., Kelli Isgrig got in big trouble for that one...she didn't care if her parents said "no"! About 8 of us girls piled in my parents blue station wagon and the rest is history. Oh yea!

Fleetwood Mac at UNI, Little Feat at Simpson - remember that one Cindy???

Oh the good times...

Is there enough time on Friday night for all the great music we listened to? (i.e., Leonard Skynard, Boston, Bob Segar, Rolling Stones, Van Halen, Rod Stewart)

1979 UNI Dome: Foghat w/special guests Pat Travers Band and some new band called Foreigner.

Five of us (including the Filer brothers, Terry Morrison from SEMCO, one of Randy's friends, and myself) piled into the Datsun station wagon and headed north on hwy 14 with a good supply of beer, peppermint schnapps, and cherry vodka (all the good stuff). Just south of Grundy Center (or, as we used to call it, Grungy Center), for some reason, in our altered state, we decide to start hanging out of the windows with bottles of assorted liquor in our hands, with the stereo blasting Foghat. We passed a car as we entered Grungy from the west. As it turned out, the car was being driven by an off-duty Grundy county sheriff's dispatcher, who immediately radio'ed in about the display she had just witnessed on the highway. We were about half a mile north of Grungy when the sheriff's deputy pulled us over and hauled us all into the county jail for "questioning" (a.k.a. so the sheriff could confiscate our hooch). The sheriff and his deputy did the good cop / bad cop routine on us for about 40 minutes, allowing us to sober up a bit. Fortunately, Randy, the younger Filer brother, was a bit more sober than the rest of us, and the sheriff actually let us go on our way to the concert (after he stole our bottles, of course). We weren't complaining. How many times would that happen in today's world ? We were soon watching Tommy Aldridge doing his bare-handed drum solo for Pat Travers Band, listening to some new song titled "Cold As Ice", and the sounds of Fool For The City were soon ringing in our ears! Can't wait for a concert echo at the reunion. I hope that DJ on Saturday has his sh*t together.

Best concert, besides the 2 Iowa Jams, has to be Kiss the same day the pope was in Des Moines. Left Marshalltown at 10 am for a 730 pm concert.

First concert in high school, a bunch of us Hy-Vee'ers went to Iowa City for Boston's, Don't look Back concert. They were great. I remember the opening band was someone I'd hadn't heard of called, Sammy Hager and the Red Rockers. I remember thinking, wow he's pretty good, he might just make it.

Marie,

I think there is time to fit a nice array of music that the majority of the class of 79' listened to into Saturday night (no pressure Jon). My concern is more the fear that Fogarty will try to influence the music selections. I talked to him Saturday evening while he was in his truck. I don't know if it was the radio, or his own music, but it was Leo Sayers "You make me feel like dancing" enough said.

Maybe the bands at the Buggies and BBQ event know some Leo Sayers and Andy Gibb. Should be no problem at the KC hall fitting in RUSH's 2112 in it's entirety while we all hit the hooka.

Jack - I was also the 1978 Boston show in Iowa City and remember Hagar wearing his red jump suit and sitting on the edge of stage with his lap-steel playing "Where Eagles Fly", much the way he does it to this day. I also remember Scholz's big church pipe organ coming up out of the stage for the "Foreplay/Phantom of the Opera" segment. Yes, great show.

Well I was very sheltered and never went to a concert in high school...but I am this year at the Iowa State Fair, we are going to be enjoying the music of Journey on August 23rd....so I missed out in high school it sounds like, sure enjoy reading this forum and the teasing going on, can't wait for John's selections. I think the committee made a wise choice in giving John the job of intertaining us for Saturday night...Hey John I have a strobe light from the 70's that still works I use it every Halloween..and the KC Hall already has an original mirror ball....

Dean you won't have to take your MILLER MIRRORS or your COORS MIRRORS off your bedroom ceiling for the KC HALL it sounds like that has been addressed!!!

05/05/09 09:13 PM #82

Lane Williams

Question Dean ......... how do you know Kari has mirrors on the ceiling of her bedroom anyway? Just curious

05/06/09 09:21 AM #83

Kari Hennis (Riemenschneider)

okay I will reply but only because Dean wants to stir things up....I remember when Dean was doing his best impression of John Travolta out to the 5th House in his white leisure suit was when you had your chance Dean, the older ladies sure loved you thou, Gigolo
Dean I didn't offer my mirrors I offer my strobe light...
And when you get as old as Dean and he forgets things like that, you know what else went with it...there is that good enough smack.....back at you baby...

(..in best WWE announcer voice)...and that's all she wrote folks...Kari "the Diva" Hennis, diving off the top rope to deliver the atomic elbow to the top of Dean "Junk Yard Dawg" Fogarty's cranium, followed by a the five-knuckle shuffle and sweet chin music...HE'S OUT FOR THE COUNT!!....

05/07/09 01:26 PM #88

Lane Williams

Looks like Deano (Junk Yard Dawg) is raising the white flag. Interesting, very interesting...

Ok, this is getting boring! I'll ask a new question, with the same concert theme, to get some responses going again. What was the last concert you attended? This might result in some odd, and different answers to our high school rock and roll days. It probably will also create some more good "clean" (Deano) ribbing. My latest was Darius Rucker & Brooks and Dunn in Miami, Oklahoma last October.

PS. Back a couple weeks ago when I saw Deano in his truck, I noticed one ticket to see Clay Aiken in Des Moines. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY !!

I lived a pretty sheltered life too Kari. My last concert was Def Leppard at the fair last year but I was serving beer so I only saw them for a few minutes, I heard them all night..... but I don't know if that counts for the last concert or not? My first concert was at the fair in 77 or 78 I think....it was Styx. Second was the BEE GEES at the Hilton in Ames in 78 or 79 and the only other concert was Garth Brooks at Cattle Congress and I don't remember the year. I was too concerned about going dancing and Jon I remember you dancing like a robot to Star Wars music at the Pig Pen in suspenders. You guys are so funny! Lane I know just how much you love the BEE GEES!

Most recent concert...hmm...

Last week: Hinder and Theory of a Deadman

2 weeks ago: Queensryche

3 weeks ago, Saliva and Shinedown

5 weeks ago, Seether, Finger Eleven, Egypt Central

..it goes blank before that, although I usually sneak off to one about every 3 or 4 weeks or so. I did see Rush four times on their 2007/2008 Snakes and Arrows tour, and did see Anthony, Flea, John, and Chad last year in Des Moines, Journey and Cheap Trick in the cities, and by bro's Sevendust both last fall.

You should all consider going to Rockfest in Cadott, WI, an annual event the 3rd weekend in July each year. You can all camp at my reserved campsites and for a mere $500 or so, first 20 rows seating, and all the food, booze, and beer you can eat/drink for 4 days straight.
This year Steve Miller Band, Journey, Judas Priest, Korn, Buckcherry, Sevendust, Hoobastank, Shinedown, Seether, Theory, among others.

Okay I am really out of it...I don't know 75% of those bands Jon....last concert was Brooks & Dunn, Garth back when my son was maybe 10, so 15 years ago...I'm out of it...alot of local bands enjoy going to the bars and listening to them...Legacy, Loose Neutral, Dogs on Skies, the local winery has one of them every Sunday...will check the schedule there and let everyone know who playing on that weekend of our reunion...
