After graduation, I enlisted in the U.S. Navy. I completed the Navy's nuclear power training program and remained with the program as an instructor for an additional two years. In 1964, I earned a 4-year scholarship to the University of Idaho where I completed a B.S. in Physics. Upon graduation from the U. of I., I was commissioned as an officer in the Navy and was sent to Pensacola, Florida for flight training. I spent 12 years in naval aviation serving as a bombardier/navigator in A-6 Intruders, a carrier-based bomber. I retired from the Navy at the end of 1980 as a Lt. Commander.
In 1981 I entered law school at the University of Idaho, graduating in 1984 with a J.D. I was admitted to the Idaho bar in 1984 and the California bar in 1991. Since I had degrees in Physics and Aeronautical Engineering, intellectual property law was a perfect fit for a legal career. Hewlett-Packard Co. hired me in 1983, initially as a patent agent and later as a patent attorney. I left HP in 1989 eventually ended up at IBM in San Jose, California where I specialized in intellectual property protection and licensing. After 8 years at IBM, HP asked me to rejoin the company at its Boise, Idaho campus. At HP, I served as senior corporate counsel for intellectual property. I retired form HP in may 2007 after a total of 14 years.
I remarried in 2004, and these days my wife and I are enjoying retirement. We spend a lot of time at our cabin in the Idaho mountains where we enjoy riding ATVs and being in the outdoors. We also are doing some traveling and cruising, visiting such places as Hawaii and Australia.
