NOLIA McTEER CUMMINGS

Larry and I were married forty years on Sept. 5, 2009. I worked at UT Knoxville from 1968 until 1988 and went to school at night. During that time I did purchasing and accounting. My career life really began when I graduated from UT in 1988 and was hired to teach in Blount County Schools. Teaching has been awesome and I refuse to even think about retiring. Larry and I live cars, cars, cars and more cars. We have met many wonderful and interesting people through our car hobby. Also, we've been reconnected with some people from Porter through the cars: Jane and David Brown, Joyce (Underwood) and Eddie Baker and others. I am in a wheelchair due to failed back surgery over ten years ago. However, I still am very thankful for being able to go to school every day, have fun with my grandchildren and attend car shows. I would love to hear from anyone from Porter. Professionally, I teach in the William Blount zone but my heart is still Porter and Heritage. Hope to hear from someone.

Attending Porter High School is one of my favorite stories. As a teacher, I have seen student change so much in how they care and interact with each other and it is not good. I wonder if any of the football players remember a summer when a Southern girl named "Sherry" called many of them? Sometimes, I tell my students about typewriters and how someone fixed a typewriter in Typing II so that the whole carriage flew out in the floor when Mrs. Berrong gave us a speed test. Mrs. Owenby came to teach world history after several teachers were "run off" by the Rockford boys. She sure didn't leave. Ron Campbell comes to mind and how he could kill flies on the chalk board with his finger during sophmore English class.
