BIRTHDAY GREETINGS

TO

MARGIE McRAE REED

God made integers, all else is the work of man.
~ Leopold Kronecker ~

Happy Birthday Margie! Today, certain binary operations have been mathematically applied to a set of elements, inorder to satisfy a certain axiom of group theory. Welcome to the group theory membership for "Sixty Eight Years" of blessings. For many of us, the difference between rational numbers, integers, whole numbers, counting numbers and real numbers weren't palatable. Notwithstanding, British mathematician Marcus du Sautoy stated "Mathematics has beauty and romance. It's not a boring place to be, the mathematical world. It's an extraordinary place; it's worth spending time there." Marcus has a passion for teaching difficult mathematical concepts and making them palatable to the general public. You officially retired two years ago, after spending forty four years in the mathematical world. Thank you for elevating the concept of numbers to your students and anyone else blessed to be in your classrooms.

Neil deGrasse Tyson explains it much better than I. He said "What you need, above all else, is a love for your subject, whatever it is. You've got to be so deeply in love with your subject that when curve balls are thrown, when hurdles are put in place, you've got the energy to overcome them. Humans aren't as good as we should be in our capacity to empathize with feelings and thoughts of others, be they humans or other animals on Earth." While you and your family celebrate today, may you be the blessed recipient of the deep love and energy that you gave to others. May the beauty, passion and romance of mathematics captivate you to have an irrational numbers type of event. As a mathematician, you know that there is nothing irrational about celebrating your sixty eighth birthday. Today I wish you a Lamb & Meyer kind of evening. May the "Hands of Passion" massage your temples to help relieve the physical and mental stress created by this pandemic. Naysayers would believe that things Don't Get No Better, but you've been jumping hurdles, both catching and throwing curve balls over the last forty four years. You've got the energy to overcome....enjoy your day...be safe my friend...

4 Tips for Overcoming COVID Caution Fatigue

CORONAVIRUS

Even the most careful social distance adherents and mask wearers might feel their commitment to safety waning as the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic continues.

Unfortunately, the pandemic is not over yet, and as flu season begins and cooler temperatures force people to spend most of their time inside, it’s going to be more important than ever to stay COVID-safe.

“This is a respiratory-spread virus, and we’re heading into a season where we’re going to see lots of other respiratory viruses,” says Emily Sickbert-Bennett, PhD, director of UNC Medical Center Infection Prevention. “These all can be prevented by staying home when you’re not feeling well, wearing a mask any time you’re around others, keeping distance and good hand hygiene. If we can just stay focused on those core things as we move toward the winter respiratory season, we’ll all be a lot safer.”

Here are four tips you can use to overcome “COVID caution fatigue” and stay safe. Remember, the more everyone follows guidelines and slows the transmission of the virus, the sooner the pandemic—and the need for all these precautions—can come to an end.

1. Stay connected with friends and loved ones.
To protect your mental health during this time, try to resist monotony and isolation and continue to find creative ways to connect with others.

“As this wears on, a lot of people are feeling so fatigued and so overwhelmed that they’re drawing back and not pushing themselves to get out of their house to connect with people in different ways,” says UNC Health clinical psychologist Tiffany Hopkins, PhD. “We need to try to push ourselves to do the things that we know are going to be beneficial in the long run, because oftentimes that will change our emotions.”

Schedule regular calls with friends and family. If possible, make them video calls. Or develop a “social bubble” of a few close friends or family members to socialize with in person. When getting together, be sure to wear masks whenever physical distancing is not possible, and try to meet somewhere with lots of open space.

“If we can all positively encourage each other to keep this momentum going, we can break through some of this complacency and help inspire that community spirit that we started out with,” Dr. Hopkins says.

2. Get outside—ideally with others.
Go for a walk or jog with a friend or family member while staying 6 feet apart and wearing a mask. Or find an outdoor boot camp or yoga class, even if you have to layer up.

“Get outside and move your body, seeking support and camaraderie, since everybody is in this together,” Dr. Hopkins says.

This three-pronged approach—exercise plus social engagement plus being outdoors—can be very powerful to lift your mood and maintain your motivation to stay vigilant during COVID-19.

3. Stay in the present.
As the pandemic goes on and on, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and feel hopeless.

“Since there’s no end in sight, we can often get stuck envisioning a future where it goes on forever,” Dr. Hopkins says.

When this happens, try to catch yourself and bring yourself back to the present. We have no way to know how long the pandemic will last, but there are hopeful signs on the horizon, such as a vaccine and more effective treatments. For now, it’s best to focus on what you can control: the present moment.

“If we can try and bring ourselves back to right now and not take on the weight of the future, it seems much more manageable to be able to take the actions that we can to protect ourselves,” Dr. Hopkins says.

4. Give yourself a break and take stock of your routine.
As you feel frustrated or disillusioned, remember these are unprecedented times. There is no playbook for how to handle this new normal, so it’s important to be gentle with yourself—and others.

“Try to identify what matters most in your life, and find creative, flexible ways to connect with those things,” Dr. Hopkins says.

One silver lining of the pandemic is that families don’t feel as rushed or overscheduled, Dr. Sickbert-Bennett says. You can use this time to reassess your family’s activities and what’s meaningful versus what’s primarily stressful. When the time comes, you’ll know which activities belong on your family’s calendar and which ones to leave behind.

“In my family, we didn’t have time to relax” before the pandemic, Dr. Sickbert-Bennett says. “And now we do. That’s definitely been a silver lining.”

BIRTHDAY GREETINGS

TO

THURMOND REDMOND

Happy Birthday Thurmond! What a rollercoaster themed year we've experianced thus far. Kinda reminds me of a ride on the old Zippin Pippin at the Mid South Fair. Congratulations on attaining another milestone along the pathway of life. The Fall Daylight Saving Time change for 2019 occurred on Sunday, November 3rd. Coincidentally, this year Daylight Saving Time ends on your birthday, two days ahead of last year. Your first gifts of the day brings you a benevolent life and more light for the morning, two unequivocal blessings!

Ivan Turgenev tells us that "There are some moments in life, some feelings; one can only point to them and pass by.Time sometimes flies like a bird, sometimes crawls like a snail; but a man is happiest when he does not even notice whether it passes swiftly or slowly." As I mentioned earlier, this has been a rollercoaster ride type of year. COVID-19 has undeniably disrupted our normal way of living. May the extra hours of daylight crawl by like a snail to extend a safe celebration for you. As you celebrate today with family, may the moments and the feelings of life that flew by like a bird continue to be the happiest of recalls. I wish you an Andre Delano type of day. Another year has passed and you've been blessed to come Full Circle. It's now time to take Foot Steps into the gift of a new year to be filled with new moments and feelings....enjoy your day of celebration...stay safe my friend....

How To Stop Stress Eating Unhealthy Foods

If you cope with the pressures of COVID-19 and the election by reaching for junk food, here's how to create healthier habits.   By Nicole Young

From COVID-19 to election season, there’s no shortage of things stressing us out this fall. And unfortunately, when the going gets tough, the tough get hungry. Tension triggers the release of stress hormones like cortisol, which can signal hunger cravings and send us on a search for food (especially the junk variety) to soothe our uneasy souls. Using food as a coping mechanism for stressful situations ― think emotional eating ― can cause more harm than good. But on the other hand, food doesn’t have to be the enemy. In fact, when you make mindful choices, food can be a useful tool for taking the edge off. It all boils down to selectivity. Choosing wisely between what will help alleviate overall stress in the long run versus the instant gratification given by unhealthy fixes is how the war on stress can be fought (and won) with food.

Food and stress are connected and should be managed concurrently

The brain and the gut literally feed off each other, so the idea that what we eat triggers and affects our emotions is by no means far-fetched. “The gut is our second brain,” explains Nikki Ostrower, an integrative nutritionist and founder of NAO Wellness. “Some of the brain’s neurotransmitters, aka happy chemicals, are manufactured in the gut ― 90% of serotonin, for example [a neurotransmitter associated with mood, sleep, appetite and gastrointestinal activity] is produced in the gut, which means there’s a direct correlation between mental health, well-being, digestion and food cravings.” What drives people in the direction of comfort food is those aforementioned cravings, plus a lack of healthy options at hand. “People turn to food when they’re stressed because it provides easy albeit temporary relief,” Ostrower said. Unfortunately, the quick and easy fixes often don’t offer any health benefits.

Comfort in the moment can be consequential in the future

Often, what we eat for contentment increases physical and mental stress. Those sluggish, tired or foggy feelings that follow an overindulgent meal are no accident, and the side effects are far from comforting. Judith Joseph, a psychiatrist and professor at New York University, has noticed an uptick in patients “cooking more decadent foods that remind them of happier times” during the pandemic. She warns, however, that “typical comfort foods like fried and sugary dishes boost a chemical in our brain called dopamine, so initially it feels really good eating these things.” But those good feelings are short-lived, Joseph reminds us, because “these foods can cause unhealthy spikes in insulin and lead to a buildup of unhealthy cholesterol in your organs, which puts stress on the body and brain.”

“We reach for the usual comfort food suspects because they initially help us feel better, but they all cause stress in the body’s organs and ultimately end up making things worse,” Joseph said. In order to tap into food’s ability to control angst, Joseph advises choosing healthy foods “as an important component of self-care that can lead to decreased anxiety.”

What to eat when you’re stressed

The urge to stress eat makes it tough to make mindful choices, but fighting that urge can prove beneficial to keeping your emotions in check. Rheumatologist Magdalena Cadet recommends eating any foods rich in zinc (which lowers cortisol levels), magnesium (which encourages relaxation and sleep) and vitamin E (which reduces oxidative stress on the brain) to help with stress reduction. “Sunflower seeds and legumes like chickpeas are great starting points,” she suggested. Ostrower, who documented her personal battle with pandemic-induced stress eating on social media, attests, “A diet rich in natural whole foods and absent of the packaged processed stuff, can be a strong ally in fending off stress. After one day of mindful and conscious food choices, feelings of clarity and strength slowly returned.”

Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids like salmon, tuna and walnuts have been known to help with combating stress since, according to Cadet, they can “reduce inflammation in the body and help prevent spikes in blood pressure.” Based on their similar stress-busting capabilities, Cadet suggests “opting for flaxseed, soybean or canola oil when cooking” and is also a fan of sweet potatoes and other nutrient-rich complex carbohydrates “for their ability to lower cortisol levels and provide adequate vitamin C and potassium, which are important stress fighters.” Chocolate devotees have options as well, according to Ostrower, who “always suggests dark chocolate for clients craving something decadent because it’s filled with essential calming minerals like magnesium.” Citrus fruits, chamomile and turmeric are also high on Ostrower’s list because they “support healthy gut function and have mood-boosting qualities.”

Choose healthy foods with similar qualities to your favorite snacks
Switching from potato chips to an apple feels like a downgrade, right? To combat that, Joseph recommends searching for reasonable facsimiles.
“Instead of seeking the crunchy sensation from chips, try crunchy almonds; instead of sipping two glasses of wine, sip one glass of wine and one cup of chamomile tea, which has natural relaxants,” she suggests. “Instead of overdosing on coffee, replace a cup of joe with a cup of matcha, which contains antioxidants and boosts attention without the high buzz or anxiety.”

BIRTHDAY GREETINGS

TO

CURTIS FARMER

Happy Birthday Curtis! Good morning and welcome once again to latitude  30° 25' 59.8188'' N and the longitude of 87° 14' 25.3392'' W. Let the milestone celebration begin. You've been blessed to arrive safely after an overnight haitus in dream land. May the day be complete with a family gathering, combining the presentation of gifts, reflective of love and suspense.  Adam Driver stated "In the military, you learn the essence of people. You see so many examples of self-sacrifice and moral courage. In the rest of life, you don't get that many opportunities to be sure of your friends." Shortly after the September 11 attacks, Driver enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was assigned to Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines as an 81mm mortar man.
Of his Marine Corps days, he reminisces, "You miss the rigor, the discipline, the camaraderie...I think you become very aware, probably more than average people your age, that we’re all going to die. You’re aware of your own mortality, and also of how much you can accomplish in a day. Time is precious, and you don’t want to waste it." Now that we've retired and have also experianced the discipline and camaraderie of the military, each new birthday brings the awareness of our own mortality. The pandemic may have limited our daily accomplishments, but we're not wasting our time. I think it's a common misconception in the civilian community that the military community is filled with just drills and discipline and pain. They forget that these are humans who are in an abnormal situation (Adam Driver). Because of the military, I believe that as veterans, we're able to deal with this abnormal situation. As you celebrate today, may the true essence of your self-sacrifices for family and the courage to face your own mortality via military service be exemplified. I wish you a Tim Cunningham type of day. May your Inner Peace provide you a safe harbor of sanctuary, because today, This Is The Life of a retiree...enjoy your day...stay safe my friend....Thank You for Your Service....

BIRTHDAY GREETINGS

TO

CLOYD NIGHTINGALE

A man sooner or later discovers

that he is the master-gardener of his soul,

the director of his life.

~ James Allen ~

Esquire Nightingale! Birthday greetings to you! Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing (Camille Pissarro). Camille was a French artist and James was a British author, collectively, they've described a glimpse into your personality and hobby. The annual competition between you and John T is a reflection of continuous moral support. As an humble gardner, you've sown seeds in barren plots, which resulted in beautiful edible plants. James stated; The more tranquil a man becomes, the greater is his success, his influence, his power for good. Calmness of mind is one of the beautiful jewels of wisdom.

Today, tranquility has blessed you to reach another mile marker. As a retired trucker, husband, son, brother and friend, there will be no more bobtailing around the city to pick up empty trailers. May your celebration with Brenda and your mom, resemble the kind of influence you've committed within them (the greatness of your success, your influence, your power of goodness, your calmness of mind). May all gifts received exemplify and reflect the beautiful jewels of wisdom that you've learned from them. An English gentleman named Monty Don, said "I always see gardening as escape, as peace really. If you are angry or troubled, nothing provides the same solace as nurturing the soil." Unless you're growing cool weather plants, the season for gardening has come to an end. This pandemic has been enough to create anger and trouble from it's daily effect upon our lives. However, we're still blessed to find a peaceful co-existance within the nurturing of our faith. Gardners, much like farmers, must have a strong faith. With that being said, I wish you a James "JP" Spraggins kind of day. JP, like you were, is a percussionist and occasionally takes Time To Heal, just as your garden plots of soil need time to regenerate. While celebrating today, enjoy your Downtime...you've earned it...stay safe my friend....
