Spring 2023 technically starts at 5:24 p.m. Eastern time Monday, when the sun will be moving directly over the Earth’s equator — the central line between the North Pole and the South Pole — bringing almost equal minutes of daylight and darkness all around the globe.
To celebrate, I'll be off line over a few days. Not to worry though, you're in extremely capable hands.....

AS WE CONTINUE TO CELEBRATE WOMEN IN HISTORY...

Vaudeville performer Esther Jones was known on stage by many names, including “Baby Esther,” “Little Esther,” “Farina’s Kid Sister,” and “Miniature Florence Mills,” is widely, although not universally, credited with being the inspiration for the Betty Boop cartoon character.

Jones was born Esther Lee Jones in 1918 in Chicago, Illinois, to William Jones and Gertrude Jones. She formerly began singing, dance, and acrobatics training at 4, and by 1924, at the age of six years old, Jones won first prize at a Charleston dance contest.

In 1928, the Jones family moved to Harlem, New York. At seven, Jones was later known for adopting the popular singing style, scat, which emphasized the baby-style of “b” and “d” sounds and nonsense syllables such as Boo-Boo-Boo’ and ‘Doo-Doo-Doo.’ Consequently, she was a sought-after child performer in the city, and was a fixtured entertainer in the famous Cotton Club and the Everglades Nightclub in New York City during the latter years of the Harlem Renaissance. She added to her entertainment fame by become an extraordinary black-bottom dancer.

In 1929, Jones was taken to Spain, where she was called “La Pandilla.” Later she performed before Sweden’s Queen Sophie Marie Viktoria and King Gustaf V, in Stockholm. Despite her notoriety, she also experienced blatant racism when denied a glass of milk in an American-operated restaurant in Stockholm. The business, however, was forced to close after her treatment there became public knowledge.

Jones performed at the Moulin Rouge, Casino de Paris, and the Empire in Paris, France. There she was dubbed the “Miniature Josephine Baker.” While in Europe, she was paid an average $750 per week for her performances and by age 11, Jones was the highest-paid child on stage globally. After performing, Jones would go backstage to play with dolls. Whenever she performed, both parents were in attendance.

In 1930, Fleisher Studios in Hollywood introduced the cartoon character Betty Boop. Jones, however, received no royalties or performing credits despite the fact that a lawsuit would eventually expose Betty Boop’s true origins. The lawsuit ironically was brought by Helen Kane, a white performer, who sued Fleisher Studios for appropriating her “Betty Boop” character without her permission and without the payment of royalties. Over the course of the Fleisher Studios v. Kane trial, it was revealed that Kane had begun mimicking Jones’ scat act and even sang the same song, “I Want to Be Loved By You’ including the “Boop-Boop-a-Doop” reference. When Kane lost the lawsuit, other studios felt emboldened to promote the Betty Boop character but it recognized neither Kane or Jones as the source.

In 1934, Jones, now 16, performed in Philadelphia at a midnight benefit performance for the NAACP. That same year, she gave a stellar performance at the American Embassy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil at the request of then Ambassador Jefferson Caffery. Brazil’s President Getúlio Dornelles Vargas, was in the audience and praised the performance and performer.

SMALL STRAWS IN A SOFT WIND by Marsha Burns

March 26, 2023: Settle down and be methodical in all that you do. Remember the old adage, haste makes waste. These times have been challenging, but you can easily overcome if you stay calm and proceed with caution. Do not take on more than you can effectively handle. Psalm 34:14 Depart from evil and do good; Seek peace and pursue it.

  T H O U G H T   F O R   C O N S I D E R A T I O N

When afflictions arrest us, we shall murmur and grumble and struggle until we see that it is God that strikes. God looks not at the oratory of your prayers, how elegant they may be; nor at the geometry of your prayers, how long they may be; nor at the arithmetic of your prayers, how many they may be; not at logic of your prayers, how methodical they may be; but the sincerity of them he looks at. God hath in Himself all power to defend you, all wisdom to direct you, all mercy to pardon you, all grace to enrich you, all righteousness to clothe you, all goodness to supply you, and all happiness to crown you.

There are two words that, when spoken, have the most unfathomable power to completely change your life. Two words which, when they pass your lips, will be the cause of bringing absolute joy and happiness to you. Two words that will create miracles in your life. Two words that will wipe out negativity. Two words that will bring you abundance in all things. Two words which, when uttered and sincerely felt, will summon all the forces and vibrations in the Universe to move all things for you. The only thing standing between you, happiness, and the life of your dreams is two words THANK YOU!

Humility is a flower which does not grow in everyone's garden. At the intersection where your gifts, talents, and abilities meet a human need; therein you will discover your purpose. We become just by the practice of just actions, self-controlled by exercising self-control, and courageous by performing acts of courage. When you feel yourself lacking something, send your thoughts towards your Intimate and search for the Divinity that lives within you. Greatness of spirit is accompanied by simplicity and sincerity. We are what we do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act, but a habit.

IT'S TIME FOR
JUST JOKING MONDAYS

“Nothing looks good on me anymore,” wailed a customer modeling an outfit in front of the department store’s mirror. “Nonsense, ma’am,” soothed the salesclerk. “That dress says it all.” “That’s the problem,” the woman replied. “I need a dress that keeps its mouth shut.”

With March kicking off the beginning of spring, there is no surprise that Warriors born during this month typically look on the bright side of things.

The birthstone for March, the aquamarine gem, is a luxurious blue in color. While it is not considered a precious stone, is often associated with not only good health and hope, but a feeling of calm, trust, and fearlessness.

Known as super creative and imaginative, March Warriors enjoy getting lost in their own thoughts and are content to spend time alone.

They are loyal. It is often difficult to find someone a loyal as a Warrior born in March. They often set the example for friendship. Apart from being loyal, they are very careful about relationships they hold.

Guided more by intuition than by structure, they tend to be compassionate and have an open heart that forgives and forgets easily. They have the ability to tap into the feelings of their loved ones, and be empathetic, which is a plus in moments of conflict.

Albert Einstein, Vincent van Gogh and Harry Houdini were born in March.  Other notables include Elton John, Queen Latifa, Shaquille O’Neal, Lupita Nyong'o, Michael Irvin, Wanda Sykes and K. Michelle.

Columbia University did a study that figured out certain birth months coincided with an increase in risks for certain diseases. The study concluded that not only are March babies not at an increased risk of respiratory, reproductive, cardiovascular or neurological illnesses, they were associated with decreased disease risk. Enjoy this news in good health, March Warriors!

Too often we take blessings for granted, like the sun, the air, health, and opportunity. Or we accept favors, honors, and privileges day after day as did the lepers their newfound health, without a word of thanks. We would thank the person who gives us a seat in the bus, the person who offers a ride, the friend who picks up the check after dinner, the person who does the baby-sitting, or the boy who cuts our lawn, but do we express gratitude to Him who gives us all?
Let us remember, too, that greatness is not always a matter of the scale of one’s life, but of the quality of one’s life. True greatness is not always tied to the scope of our tasks, but to the quality of how we carry out our tasks whatever they are. In that attitude, let us give our time, ourselves, and our talents to the things that really matter now, things which will still matter a thousand years from now.

The grateful mind continually expects good things, and expectation becomes faith. In daily life we must see that it is not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratefulness that makes us happy. It is necessary, then, to cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.
Gratitude draws the mind into closer touch with the source from which the blessings come.

Glaucoma, the disease that causes vision loss: symptoms to watch out for
Story by salutisticamente.it

The importance of preventing glaucoma

Glaucoma is a disease that affects the eyes - the optic nerve in particular - and if not treated in time can also lead to loss of vision. This eye disease affects around 55 million people worldwide and it is very important to try to prevent it as much as possible so that sight is preserved. (Source: Humanitas Hospital Milan).

What is glaucoma

Glaucoma is caused by either increased internal pressure in the eye or, in limited cases, reduced blood supply to the optic nerve. The resulting damage leads to visual field loss, initially in peripheral portions and later in central areas of the visual field, impairing vision.

The causes of glaucoma

Glaucoma can be caused by congenital forms, i.e. forms that already occur at birth, or non-congenital forms. What causes it, even in non-congenital forms, is a reduction in the function of the trabecular meshwork, which is responsible for draining the aqueous humour from inside the eye to the outside. If the trabecularis does not function as it should, an increase in pressure inside the eye occurs, which then causes damage to the optic nerve and thus leads to the development of glaucoma.

Glaucoma symptoms to watch out for

To try to prevent the onset of glaucoma as much as possible, it is important to pay attention to the symptoms it can cause. These include loss of side, top and bottom vision that can cause difficulty in reading, driving and moving around spaces. Regular eye examinations are a good way to prevent the disease also because increased blood pressure is not immediately felt with symptoms.

Subjects most at risk of developing glaucoma

Individuals who are most at risk of developing glaucoma, and who should therefore undergo regular examinations, are especially those who have already had a family history of glaucoma, people with visual field defects, people who suffer from high myopia or diabetes, and people who have been taking cortisone medication for a long time.

The beauty of life is, while we cannot undo what is done, we can see it, understand it, learn from it and change. So that every new moment is spent not in regret, guilt, fear or anger, but in wisdom, understanding and love.
