John Barrow of our class reported that he saw an obituary for Dolf Walters in Anchorage, Alaska, in 1981. That obituary said this Dolf was born in 1943. Susan
Dolf had an appointment to the Naval Academy immediately out of high school. For personal reasons he left the academy during his freshman year. I remember his never-give-up attitude, especially on the cross country team. He always finished at the back of the pack, but he always finished. After he left Navy, I was stationed at Millington for aviation electronics school before I got orders to the Naval Academy prep school. Dolf and I would go spelunking in caves in NW TN, NE Ark and SE MO. I remember one time in particular where we were crawing in a previouslyh unexplored section of one cave and the floor gave out under Dolf, leaving him strattled over an abyss of unknown depth. He kept his cool and got recognition in one of the Spelunking journals for that discovery! I lost track of him after I was transferred to Navy Prep school and subsequently to the Naval Academy. He had always been on the "unable to find" list. I regret we never got to get together and exchange sea stories.
Seeing you died in Alaska, old buddy, you have once again gone before me. Alaska is one of two states I haven't visited. You preceeded me at Navy, to AK and to eternity. I hope we end up in the same place. RIP, Dolf.
Dolf and I did science projects together. He and I also went cave exploring around Mountain Home , Arkansas. His first year at the naval academy was quite a time for him. We went to a movie when he returned home for Christmas. He was dressed to the hilt and looked like an admiral. Every time we passed a guy stationed at Millington, the naval guys would salute Dolf. I oftened wondered what had happened to him. I am sorry to hear that he has passsed away. If anyone knows more about his death I would like to know.
