Joce and her first husband Joe Spilka were very good friends of my husband Joe and mine and became our best bridge buddies. Tragically, they lost their elder daughter in an auto accident when she was at the University of Alabama and their marriage ended about a year later. Joce married again to George Miller, but suffered and died from lung cancer just months after the birth of a grandson by her younger daughter, Angie. During the good times of her life, Joce loved to dance, travel, enjoy her girls and lived life to the fullest.
Joce was one of my very best friends. We were Phi Sig "sisters" together and did an infamous black-leotard modern dance to Ray Charles during rush one year. When her parents went out of town, we stayed alone at her house and visa versa. How grown up we were - at least until the time I took out the garbage, took off the lid and confronted my first-ever possum! For graduation our mothers gave us a typical formal 50's tea that even made the newspaper. Unfortunately after WSHS we lost touch. I remember visiting her mom's house once where I saw Joce's wedding portrait and then, years later, learning of her daughter's accident. Some of my fondest WSHS memories were shared with Joce.
Think I was in homeroom with Joce from 7-5. My most vivid memory is the "books" she was always writing. They were really good and I was sore impressed. Does anyone know if she continued that love of writing? She was just plain cute and I envied her unusual and romantic name! Love to her family.
