50th Year Reunion

DETAILS

A year of planning, three days of fun.

The weekend-long celebration marking 50 years since we graduated from Maloney High School seemed to go by in a flash.

It started with a round of golf Friday afternoon, followed by an informal get-together and refreshments. Several of us gathered at Maloney to walk through the building and see how much has changed since we were there. Friday night we hung out at the sports bar at the Sheraton in Meriden. It was a fairly early night, not that we all couldn’t have stayed until 1:30 and closed the place, of course.

The rain on Saturday cancelled our planned hike up to Castle Craig, which really was the only event that didn’t work out. It was cool but dry when we showed up at Gouveia Vineyards in Wallingford that afternoon. Between the holiday weekend and the beautiful foliage, the place was packed to overflowing, but we didn’t mind. We waited on the patio reconnecting and sipping wine until they summoned us to a table inside.

About 80 people, classmates, spouses and others, showed up for the main event, the dinner-dance at the Villa Capri.

We all had lanyards holding little cards with our name and our photo from the yearbook. It was amazing how much easier it was to “recognize” people when we could sneak a peek at them looking like they did back in the day.

We all stood around and schmoozed and nibbled and snuck more peeks at ID cards and hugged and reminisced and ate a lot. After dinner we danced to “In the Still of the Night” and other classics from the ‘60s. Who could ever forget singing that song on fan buses to football games, with the kids who could sing doing the melody and the rest of us doing the “shah-doop be-dooby-do” part?

Sunday morning about 25 of us went to St. John Lutheran on Paddock Avenue for a service that included remembering classmates who have died. Karen Burkhardt Wasilewski gave a beautiful talk and read their names. After the service we had our own coffee hour, which actually lasted quite a bit longer than an hour. Nobody wanted to leave.

Suddenly it was over. We’ve gotten lots of great comments from people. The committee is getting together one more time just for the fun of it. Maybe we’ll start planning the next one! – Nancy Hall Thompson
