It is with sadness that another classmate has died. Lowell (Sonny) Gay passed away at his home in Atlanta, on June 2nd, from an aggressive type of Leukemia. Our condolences to his family.
Please take care of yourselves. Life is way too short.
Lisa, from your previous message about Sonny, I had a chance to email him and tell him I remembered him from high school. Thank you for keeping us posted on our classmates. You are right, life is too short.
Heart felt condolences to his family. He e lived behind us and was always coming over (mostly to talk about cars with my brother). Having him around made us feel cheerful, liked, connected and reassured. I'll miss that redhead!
I'm just seeing this sad message about Sonny. He was a funny guy in high school, and a close friend of Brian's, and the other neighborhood guys. He was one of the few redheads in our class. I did write a note to him, when I heard about his illness a couple of months ago, and he was grateful for all of the prayers and well wishes. I wish his family strength and healing in their grief.
Iknew Sonny for over 60 years from organized baseball. I recently found out we both lived in Atlanta area. I was fortunate to reach out to Sonny right before he passed and we had tried to schedule a lunch. Wasn't meant to be. Sonny was a humorous guy. I will pay respects at his celebration.
While I didn't know Lowell, I want to thank Lisa for her keeping the Class of '69 "together" and updated on who's around and those sad moments when we lose a few....I still see my BFF from Coral Park, Linda Levine Timmons regulary for breakfast - we both live in Aventura and she's now retired, giving back to the community in a variety of ways. I'm still EVP and lobbying for the Builders Assn. of South Florida, my position for ove 40 years, after a stint on Capitol Hill. So, all good and thank you Lisa! Keep remembering our HS friends, Truly.
I too remember Lowell but have very memories of him.
I would also like to say Thank You very much to Lisa for keeping us all connected. Though we have all scaterd following our own paths thru life, Lisa has keep us all connected. Thank you again.
People, this is getting to be overwhelming. We need to make a deal to stay as healthy as possible, and remain alive. I have a firm deal with Terry Marsh, and intend to honor it. I have such vivid memories of Brian, Sonny, Bill Hayes, Freddy Johnson, and Murray Brown, just being silly boys, and loving life. R.I.P. to those who have passed, and blessings to those who are still fighting on. 💜
I have nothing but fond memories of Lowell (Sonny) Gay and it is with great sadness I post this note regarding his passing. I had known since West Miami Jr. High and recently had been thinking about him and what a great guy he was. I last saw Sonny just before he moved to Atlanta. He stopped by to bring me a photo he took from one of our Mardi Gras adventures. The picture was of my brother and me with long hair smoking a joint, sitting somewhere in New Orleans on somebody’s trunk. Sonny was always doing things like this which made you know he valued the friendship. Until I read Helene Miller’s comment: “I have such vivid memories of Brian (Newsholme), Sonny, Bill Hayes, Freddy Johnson, and Murray Brown, just being silly boys, and loving life.”, I had almost forgotten what good friends we were.
I never saw Sonny again but I remember staying in touch for a short time through a few letters (remember, we didn’t have email or texting back then.) He remained the same old Sonny, cheerful and with a helpful personality, even when things were not going so well. We corresponded one more time, shortly before his passing. I sent him some memories and he responded thanks Bill and have a blessed day.
My heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends. Even though we had not been in contact, I will miss him and the world will be a little less complete without Lowell (Sonny) Gay.
