In Memory

Greg Totland

Gregory Totland "Carpe Diem" 2/5/58 ~ 12/11/02  Gregory Totland, Salt Lake City, loving brother, friend, nephew and son, passed away in his apartment on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002. Born on a Wednesday in Salt Lake City, Utah, Gregory spent his life in the pursuit of knowledge. He was a leader on the debate team in his high school and graduated from the University of Utah with a BA in Fine Arts, Film Studies. He then went on to follow his dream in New York where he completed his graduate work at Tish School of the Arts in Film. He later returned to Utah and his family and started his PhD in the department of Education, Culture & Society, at the University of Utah. While working on his degree he enjoyed teaching undergraduate students and introducing his colleagues to the connections between film and schooling. Greg was always reading, whether it was the New York Times or the latest on education and philosophy. He was passionate about films and while he was a tough critic, he was also trying to understand the use of film and its impact on culture. He was always ready to give his opinion and we looked forward to a lively discussion whenever Greg was with us. We were always entertained by his quick wit and humorous perspective on politics, sports and religion. He will also be remembered as an avid UTE fan. Greg's family and friends meant everything to him and he would spend time with his nieces and nephews as much as possible. He kept close connections with his friends all over the country. His extended family all loved and supported his efforts and he appreciated their diversity as well as their generous hearts. He was a loving son and support to his mother Maureen, and a dedicated brother to his two sisters, Denise and Teresa, and to his younger brother Zeke. We will miss you big brother. Graveside services will be held on Sat., December 21st at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 South Highland Dr. at 12:00 noon. A brief toast and tribute to his life will be held at Maureen Totland's home following the services. Directors, Independent Funeral Service.
