Wally Hinz

Hinz, Wally MASS TIME ADDED BELOW Passed away suddenly March 29, 2017, from injuries sustained in a fall. Survived by loving and devoted wife, Karen, daughter Katie (David) Brenke, granddaughters Emmie and Hannah, grandsons Jacob and Sully, siblings Bob, Bill (Cathy), Mary (John) Rhoades, Jim (Candy), Joe, Pat (Dave) Linell, Teresa Isenor, Charlie (Judy), sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Warren (Mary Penly) Anderson, Jill (Heidi Maghan) Anderson, Kris (Dan) Johnson, 20 nieces and nephews, and countless dear friends. Almost 40 years ago (3/30/1977) a car accident took Wally's sight, but it didn't take away his sense of humor and love of people. Wally had a special gift of joy and was an inspiration to everyone who met him. Wally's memory of the past was truly remarkable. His stories were legendary, his detail awe-inspiring. He loved to find the common thread with anyone and link it to a tale from long ago. We all have a Wally story to share, preferably over a beer. He was a proud De LaSalle Islander who remained an active alum. After he lost his sight, he cherished his Monday morning golf games. Wally's final gift was to donate his eyes for transplant or research. To know Wally was to love him. Words can't express how much he will be missed. Wally was so many things to so many people. He was my best friend in so many ways. Even after Rachel and I moved to AZ, we called each other frequently especially doing football and hockey seasons. And we called each other on our birthdays. Not sure who started that tradition but my money is on Wally.

Below are some entries I made on Wally's guest page.

Words cannot express how sorry I am about Wally's passing. He was my touchstone, my memory. I saw the following words in the past and they made me smile through my tears then and now.

Smiles Breaking Through Tears

Dying is a gradual diminishing and final vanishing over the horizon of life.  When we watch a  sailboat leaving port and moving toward the horizon, it becomes smaller and smaller until we can no longer see it.

But we must trust that someone is standing on a faraway shore seeing that same sailboat become larger and larger until it reaches its new harbor.  Death is a painful loss.  When we return to our homes after a burial, our hearts are in grief.  But when we think about the One standing at the other shore eagerly waiting to welcome our beloved friend into a new home, a smile can break through our tears.

Your are all in Rachel and my prayers,

Bill Draves DLS 1960 and SJU 1964 and Honeywell 1966 to 1972

I watched the opening ceremony of the 2017 Masters Golf Tournament this morning. The Master of Ceremonies started off by talking about the late Arnold Palmer and all that he meant to the golfing world. There was not a dry eye on the course. On this day that you were laid to rest, I could not help but feel that all of the accolades that were said about Arnold Palmer applied to you. You had that same magical affect on everyone you met on the golf course and in life. And we all are going to miss you a great deal so much so that words cannot describe our sorrow. You and I played a lot of golf together and I know you coveted my magic 5 wood. Now you have a true magic 5 wood to play that great golf course in the sky as well as a front row seat to every Masters Tournament into eternity. Rest in peace Wally knowing that you touched many people and that you were loved by many people none more than me. Your friend, Bill.

Wally was truly my memory and I helped create a few for him. Our fun and laughter on the golf course was just a small part of our friendship. There were so many times, so many things that we would talk about and laugh about as we remembered: DLS, SJU, Honeywell, Cube 2, on and on. I miss him a lot.
