He died from what I think is called an air embolism when he was scuba diving, many years ago.

That would be terrible. My husband had one 2 years ago in his lungs and it was nearly fatal. To have that while under water would be very confusing and pretty difficult to get treatment in time. Very sad.

My sincere condolences to everyone who knew and loved Reed. May he rest in peace.

I had just spoke to him a day before, he said there was no snow in the mountains yet so he and some others were going to Ensenada to dive and were going to pick me up in Laguna when they came through LA. I had just been transferred to Detroit, so we laughed that I wasn't going to make it with them. A few days later my Mom called and said Reed had drowned. I was devastated, he was a great friend!

In response to Deborah's post: Not that it's any particular comfort, but as I recollect what I was told, he died on shore after his dive.

That's so sad. He was such a nice guy. Went to a Sadie Hawkins Dance with him.

Reed was one of my best friends in high school and life after school.  We lived at each others houses, and his parents were like my second set.  Reed was my Best Man at my wedding, we named our second son after Reed.  The day my mom called to tell me that Reed had died in Mexico was and has been the saddest day of my life.  I think of him and still cry everytime our son Scott Reed visits us.  I have had a huge hole in my heart since 1977.

Thank you Jeff and Dickie and Linda for sharing your kind memories of Reed. It's so comforting to read that people think back on him with love and friendship.

To set the record straight, he did not die from an embolism and he was not brought back to shore alive.  But after more than forty years, the details of his death are probably no longer important. It was his life that was precious and those of you who knew him can well understand the depth of our loss.

It means such a lot that he is remembered.

Thanks Nini for setting the record straight about Reed, I read alot of speculation on this site, knowing it wasn;t what happened, but did not want to comment about something that was a family matter.  I will be talking to you soon on the private site. Dick

I apologize for passing on inaccurate information I was told about Reed.  The sadness at his death, however, was very real.  Best to all, Judy
