I'm tearing up.  I feel an emptiness.  I am a sophomore in homeroom when I first meet a boy by the name of Bob Leslie.  I notice he is finishing up his geometry homework due tomorrow afternoon.  I have the same homework and am stumped on one of the problems.  I ask Bob if he’ll meet me the next day before homeroom to help me with the problem to which he replies with that big adorable grin of his, “Sure.”  The next day Bob walks up the hall all tall, dark, and handsome to meet me.  This view is significantly different from seeing him sitting at a desk in a classroom.  Somehow I manage to pay attention as Bob effortlessly shows me how to do my geometry problem.  He is so kind and smart.  I can tell by his beautiful penmanship and by the way he forms the numbers and shapes on the geometry problem that he is artistic as well.  When the bell rings for us to go to homeroom, again there’s that huge boyish smile.  A few days later, I muster up the courage to ask Bob to go to Sadie Hawkins with me.  The night of the dance Bob brings me a pair of wire rimmed glasses to match the ones he’s wearing.  Then I find out he can dance, too.  Sheesh, what a package!  Look at the photo of 15 year-old hillbilly us.  I coveted Bob’s legs.  If I had gams like his instead of my Mary Lou Retton thighs, I might have been a Rockette, who knows. Through the years after we graduate from high school, I see Bob a few times. Underneath Bob’s stellar attributes is something most of us don't understand.  But the kind and intelligent Bob is always there.  I will forever remember Bob this way.  I will also remember Bob's sense of humor, his considerable athletic achievements, his myriad talents, and his wonderful personality that never failed to make me smile.  I only wish I could have talked to him one last time before he left this world.  Heck, I’m going to talk to him anyway: “Rest in peace, sweet man.  Rest in peace."

With love, Julie Peterson.
