March 23, 1948 – June 8, 2013

Van passed away at home of heart disease. We became very close friends and I talked to him most every day. If I did not hear from him I would call him.  When he called me, my husband would say “Your other husband is calling”.  He was very kind, compassionate and  giving of his time and any resources available to him.

Sometimes Van would call me just to tell me that he had read the Obits in the Odessa American that day and his name was not in them!  He knew his time was limited but he made the most of life as he was able. He loved his dogs and cat and worried  about who would care for them if he passed away.

Van worked tirelessly on MHS Class reunions.  He searched for class members and made contacts when nobody else could. He was a great help to me on this class website as well.

Van loved the Lord and had assurance that he would be in heaven with his family when the time came.

I loved him dearly and his passing leaves an empty place in my life.

Friends in High School, we became even better friends in the past few years.  It was Van who somehow tracked me after 30 years in the Special Ops community and reconnected me with my classmates.  He was the one who persuaded me to attend my first class reunion (in 2001) and convinced me that I would enjoy it.  I will always be grateful:  the old friends who have again become a part of my life mean a lot to me, and it was Van who made it happen.  My e-mail in-box and my days seem empty without his steady stream of jokes, anecdotes, philosophy, and comments on our crazy world. He loved life and people and his passing leaves a big empty space.
