Bill's Latest Interactions
Doug and I became friends during several summers before he came to the Mt Lebanon school system. At the time, the Werlinich family lived in Scott Township, but built a vacation home at Deer Lake (near Uniontown) where my family had a cabin. Doug, Bill Mehaffey and I were the only 13 year old boys on the lake and became good friends. Doug and I spent many hours fishing and there was always a gang of kids who enjoyed lake swimming, volleyball games, hayrides, drivein movies and daily card games on spread towels at the swim dock. Doug started high school with Bill Mehaffey and me as a Scott Township tuition student but the family soon moved to Mt Lebanon. (Photo courtesy of Bill Mehaffey)

Doug and I remained great friends through high school and double dated for the Sr prom. Doug's dad owned a Ford dealership and loaned us the new 4 seat T-bird convertable for the night.
Doug went to Northwestern U and I went to Gettysburg College but we remained close during vacations and I remember sitting in the fraternity TV room watching Doug's girlfiend, Jackie Mayer, become 1963's Miss America. Watching the Miss America Pageant in those days was a big event and the fraternity brothers were impressed.
But Doug married a different pretty Northwestern girl and stayed at Northwestern for an MBA. I visited Doug and his wife in Chicago after I started at USS while on one of my first business trips.
After earning his MBA, Doug went into banking and in short order was a vice president at Chase Manhatten in NY. His first marriage didn't last but my wife, Mary Lou, and I spent a few hours with Doug and his second wife at Deer Lake when they were back for a visit with family. She was also a VP at Chase. Doug was promoted to manage the Chase London office and later the Tokyo office so we lost contact for a long time. But our parents were Deer Lake friends and we kept track that way. He later had senior positions at Marine Midland Bank (CEO, I think) and Citibank.
With the advent of email and without the distractions of employment we resumed contact after some years.
My wife and I visited Doug at his Southampton home some years back and after his wife, Elizabeth, had passed away. He was a great host and we enjoyed his passion for jazz. Doug had an extreme high-end sound system that he was helping to market as a hobby. He had about an acre of elaborate landscape shrubbery that he tended meticulously and was proud to show. As we were leaving, Doug was preparing for a visit from Jackie Mayer. Doug's brother, Gary, advises that Jackie stayed in frequent contact during Dougs's year and a half struggle with illness.
Fond memories. Rest In Peace Doug.

Happy Birthday Jay! Still remember walking home from HS and your "hold my books*" forward flip. *Later known as a "hold my beer" moment.
