Years You Played Viking Varsity Basketball:

1986-1988

Year You Graduated From BRVHS:

1988

What Was Your Varisty Number:

#22

Most Memorable Game:

Eastern Hancock 1988. Was not much of a scorer but got 8 points in first quarter and finished with 12. Remember Coach Hamilton when asked on the Saturday Morning Coaches Show what he thought about my scoring the night before he said "he has about as much talent as this cup of coffee but he has more heart then any one else". That was fine by me because I knew my limitations. That first quarter was basically my responding to him being all over me after the first game of the Mattoon Tournament the week before.

Varsity Coaches You Played For At BRVHS:

Randy Clevenger and John Hamilton

Do You Still Enjoy The Game Of Basketball?

Yes, still play once or twice a week in pick up games at our local YMCA. My daughter Morgan plays Freshmen basketball at our local high school. I love following her around to her games. In 7th and 8th Grade her team went 40 and 8 including losing only one game at home, two regional championships, one sectional championship, and one trip to the Illinois Elite Eight. Her summer team has also won the AYBT National Championship back in Fort Wayne the Summer of 2007.

I also still watch every Indiana University and High School Basketball Game I can.

I try to follow Blue River each year by watching for scores on the internet. Also followed Coach Hamilton's kids (John and Ellen) by reading the Indy Star.

Who Where Your Favorite Viking Players?

Mark Thompson, Terry Bales, and Brad Linville

Other Viking Basketball Stories:

Remember Mattoon coming back to beat Tri-High to get to the Championship Game of the New Castle Sectional in 1989. Scott Johnson caught fire to help bring them back.

Remember Brad Linville trying to carry the team against New Castle. I forgot how many he had but it was a bunch.

Also remember Donnie Sampley coming back after getting a cut on his head that looked pretty bad. I forget the team they were playing but the coaches son on that team was incredible and one of the best in the State. Donnie was one of the toughest nose kids I remember watching play. I think the kid on the other team's name was Morris and Donnie gave him all he could handle. Here is a follow up from Scott Johnson helping my old forgetful mind fill in the details. "Hey Donnie I remember that game like it was yesterday, the team was morristown and the kid's name was Brady adkins !! The Courier Times headline was something like this BRADY CUTS SAMPLY THEN VIKINGS IN OVERTIME WIN!!"
