While in university, I got to tag along with the Fortenbacher family on a trip to Europe. Finally met my relatives in the Netherlands, face to face. Graduated from the University of Iowa with a BA, then worked at Bandag for several years before canoeing down the Mississippi River with Kevin Duncan in 2000. (Kevin's probably the only person laid back enough to put up with me for that long of a trip.) After that, spent awhile working on the Mississippi. I even got to drive a tug boat (no container barges - just the tug) down the Mississippi from the Twin Cities to the Quad Cities.
I moved to Korea in 2002 to teach English (Troy Carter helped get me settled in). Met my wife there. She's incredible. She speaks 3 languages - Korean, English and Japanese. I hope our future kids get both her smarts and her good looks. She definitely got the short end of the stick.
Loved living in Korea and traveling Asia...absolutely loved it....but in 2007 we moved to the small Pacific island of Saipan (a quasi-US territory) after coming here for a dive vacation. Became a scuba Instructor in 2008. In August 2009, I started work as the Safety & Security Coordinator at the Saipan International Airport. So, during the week I spend my time at the airport and then spend the weekends as a dive guide/instructor.
I really wish I could take a trip back to Muscatine every year but it's been several years since I was back to see family and friends. I'm planning on a trip back to Muscatine in early 2010.
