In the 8th grade, at the Country Club, Rafto threw a cherry bomb at me; it landed on my leg near my knee. It was a pretty nasty looking hole in my leg, so my Uncle Glen Berkenbile scooped me up and drove me to his office where he cornered me (I was behaving badly....like a wild animal) and gave me a tetanus shot then took me back to the Club for the remainder of the activities. I have always reminded Rafto of his assault on my person every time we've seen each other over the years. We had the best telephone visit about 6 weeks before he died; we talked and talked and talked ABOUT EVERYONE! Totally satiated in conversation, we said goodbye (our last). I am so thankful Rafto called me at that exact time. He was feeling so well; had moved out of son's home to apt & independent living; was dating a woman who lived in his apt complex. He sounded so happy..................(thanks Rafto for the long friendship and all of the wonderful memories)
Mike was a good friend. We were both surprised when he showed up to do an audit at one of my banks in the Dallas area. It was just a government formality and all the money was still at the bank, but it was great to see him!
It is much easier and fun to remember the good times, and with Rafto there were always good times at "The Pool". No one drowned, not too much broken glass, no excessive amounts of pee in the pool, and those who had to clear out their stomachs usually did so in the bathroom or in the hedges when leaving. However, you could easily be seen by the Odom girls across the street if you were not discreet. The liquor supplies of Dr. Rafter did suffer major shortages and were sometimes replaced, only to be depleted once again. Mike was a good soul and always had an open hand to help. We will miss him.
