THE CLASS REUNION . . .
Every 5 years, as summertime nears,
An announcement arrives in the mail,
A reunion is planned; it'll be really grand;
Make plans to attend without fail.

I'll never forget the first time we met;
We tried so hard to impress.
We drove fancy cars, smoked big cigars,
And wore our most elegant dress.

It was quite an affair; the whole class was there.
It was held at a fancy hotel.
We wined, and we dined, and we acted refined,
And everyone thought it was swell.

The men all conversed about who had been first
To achieve great fortune and fame.
Meanwhile, their spouses described their fine houses
And how beautiful their children became.

The homecoming queen, who once had been lean,
Now weighed in at one-ninety-six.
The jocks who were there had all lost their hair,
And the cheerleaders could no longer do kicks.

No one had heard about the class nerd
Who'd guided a spacecraft to the moon;
Or poor little Jane, who's always been plain;
She married a shipping tycoon.

The boy we'd decreed 'most apt to succeed'
Was serving ten years in the pen,
While the one voted 'least' now was a priest;
Just shows you can be wrong now and then.

They awarded a prize to one of the guys
Who seemed to have aged the least.
Another was given to the grad who had driven
The farthest to attend the feast.

They took a class picture, a curious mixture
Of beehives, crew cuts and wide ties.
Tall, short, or skinny, the style was the mini;
You never saw so many thighs.

At our next get-together, no one cared whether
They impressed their classmates or not.
The mood was informal, a whole lot more normal;
By this time we'd all gone to pot.

It was held out-of-doors, at the lake shores;
We ate hamburgers, coleslaw, and beans.
Then most of us lay around in the shade,
In our comfortable T-shirts and jeans.

By the 40th year, it was abundantly clear,
We were definitely over the hill.
Those who weren't dead had to crawl out of bed,
And be home in time for their pill.

And now I can't wait; they're setting the date;
Our 60th is coming, I'm told.
It should be a ball, they've rented a hall
At the Shady Rest Home for the old.

Repairs have been made on my hearing aid;
My pacemaker's been turned up on high.
My wheelchair is oiled, and my teeth have been boiled;
And I've bought a new wig and glass eye.

I'm feeling quite hearty, and I'm ready to party
I'm gonna dance 'til dawn's early light.
It'll be lots of fun; But I just hope that there's one
Other person who can make it that night.

Susan Jean Brown (Douthit)

Regarding Cindy Hadden...I shared with Jan at the reunion: 10-15 years ago, I went into a local print shop here in McKinney to have some printing done. A lady walked out from one of the side offices and I immediately recognized her to be Cindy Hadden from NHS. I smiled and said ,"Hi, Cindy !". She looked at me strangely and replied , "My name is Cindy.". I said, I'm Susan Brown from high school.", realizing she did not know me at all which was very depressing seeing how we sat right next to each other in English class. She replied that she did not know me at all. I insisted that we went to high school together and asked if she had gone to NHS. She said that indeed she had gone to high school in Nacogdoches. Just as I was about to retreat from the conversation believing that I had either deteriorated physically to the point of unrecognizability or I just wasn't "popular" enough at NHS for anyone to remember me, Cindy asked me to step inside a nearby room to talk. She told me that years earlier she had been in a terrible car accident and nearly died from it. She was riding in a speeding convertible when it flipped and she was thrown from the car. She showed me the full body brace she was wearing and would wear for the rest of her life due to multiple spine/hip fractures..she pushed back the bangs across her forehead to reveal a scar across the top of her forehead that ran around the top of her head and explained that she had suffered a severe brain injury and thus lost her entire memory of the early years of her life. She then asked me about high school. Knowing that I could have kept her all day with details of NHS, I chose to be brief and tell her only that when she arrived at NHS, all of the girls were very envious of how beautiful she was..flawless skin and eyelashes that were a mile long and her short haircut was unique and fit her perfectly..that she was friendly and fit in with all of us immediately..that I loved getting to know her in English class although we got in trouble constantly for talking in class... She seemed to like hearing of her past but was somewhat sad and ended the conversation quickly to get back to work. She told me she lived in a local townhouse here in McKinney and that was the last of the conversation.. That was the last and only time I saw her..The print shop is long ago torn down to make way for new growth.. I wish we could locate her again and connect her to this wonderful web site so that she could be reminded of her high school friends and experiences.. I cannot imagine losing my memories of such a pivotal part of my life..NHS defined who we all became. She was still as lovely and very much recognizable...Wherever she is, I wish her all the happiness in the world as she is deserving..Maybe, she will be found...

And while I am posting....might as well make amends with James Collins..Thank you for your gracious response..My apologies for the unjustified "fear of the smokers" feelings..Congratulations on giving up the smokes.. As a peace offering, I'll throw you a couple of lines from comments I made resulting from our reunion that you might turn into song lyrics.. Having traveled all over the world, spending time in some very remote,impressive, historical, often scary cultures and places..nothing compares to coming back home to deep East Texas. I told my kids," I had a Redneck Flashback!! Man, it was great to be back home !! or more applicable to the fact that I felt shy around you..you might consider, "All the nice girls are STILL afraid of me !!" Congratulations on your success and my best wishes to your lovely family..Susan
