Great thoughts, Pam!

Wow, rough night weather-wise in East Texas!

Storms, tornadoes, hail, high winds. The weather sirens were going off, the weather man on TV was yelling take cover!

The boys and I and 2 of the cats got in our hallway. One of the cats was MIA and then she opened the door to the hallway closet and came walking out from where she had been hiding. That scared me to death! I thought she knew something I didn't!

But all the storms blew over with no damage in our area (the Azalea District), but South Tyler, Canton, and other areas were hit pretty hard.

Two weeks ago it was 14 degrees, then yesterday it was like 75 before this all blew in.

Gotta love East Texas!

Hope all are safe--it sounded like Nac and Lufkin were taking it on the cuff too.

Y'all check in and let us know......

From Don Upton last night:

From: Don Upton
Email: dupton1@stx.rr.com

Jan...I spoke to Mike Adams today. He has been in Indianapolis since November 22 last year. He was able to get liver transplant status sooner up there rather than remaining on the list here in Texas.
He informed me he should receive a new liver within the next 30 days. That is great news although later than he originally expected. He sounded very tired but remains upbeat with the latest developments. His personal email is mwadams1@gmail.com if anyone would like to make contact with him. I know he would enjoy hearing from anyone, just letting him know what they have been up to. let's keep Mike in our thoughts and prayers and hope for a speedy recovery.
Please pass this on to the Classmates population. I'll keep everyone posted on any new progress. He asked me to pass this on to everyone. Regards, Don Upton

Mike's Caring Bridge posting this morning:

It's Friday morning. Last night I was brought to the emergency department, examined, had a CT scan performed and was admitted to the hospital. I have started retaining fluid in my abdomen (ascites) and developed a bacterial infection (peritoniti?s) so I have to have IV rocephin (big gun antibiotic) and today they are going to "tap" (drain) my belly. They do this with a large needle and syringe. I don't know how much fluid there is, and until I see the doctor this moring, I won't know what the CT results were. I started having pain on Monday evening and by Wednesday it was really bad. I held off one more day, till I was in terrible pain and short of breath. The doc who admitted me said that the infection was caught fairly early, so they should be able to clear it up in 5-6 days. So I'll be watching the playoff in a hospital bed this weekend. Matt brought me in last night and his parents were set to come get me later this weekend, but that probably won't be necessary, now. My MELD is at 24 this morning, up from 18 on the 7th. That put's me in a higher priority for the transplant, as long as the infection is controlled.? So I'll update in a day or so. Pain is pretty well controlled by dilaudid, but it makes me itch like a dog with fleas. Makes me stoooopid, too. I have cell phone coverage and internet access... so all the comforts of home. And really nice people.

Latest update from Mike Adam's Caringbridge site:

Hi everyone. It's been hard to get anything posted since everytime I try to update anything on my PC, my eyes cross and I go to sleep. I finallly just decided I needed the rest and went with the flow.

Oops... another nap there!
OK... finish finish finish!

I have a final belly tap in a few hours, then they will flush the Ativan leave and I should be discharged this afternoon, barring any snafus.
My legs are extremely swollen from edema. Diuretics have been ordered and increased, but the first dose is at 0900, I'm not too worried about kidney function... my creatinine at 0300 was 1.19, so there's room to play. I'm just not sure I want to go home and play when it would be easier to "experiment" here with observation personnel readily available. We'll see.

I'll post...eith?er way.

Bonnie says "Go fer it!"

Thanks, Everyone, for all the birthday wishes Sunday!

It is hard to believe we are pushing 55!

And speaking of that, Joey and I have talked and we are thinking next April or May for our Vegas get away (2011).

Let me know which you prefer and we'll pick a firm date and let everyone start planning.

What happens in Vegas......

Wow Vegas sounds fun!!!! Just wanted to say that I love the Valentine video. Jan, you are so great to spend time doing these things for us. Really, they just kill me. I am getting so mushy these days. Anyway, thanks.

From Mike Adams' Caringbridge site last night:

I went out on Monday... It was a sunny day (albeit cold), and I needed to be outside. I went to the pharmacy, the library and the grocery store, all in anticipation of the snowsorm to come...
Well it came Monday night and pretty much continued all day Tuesday. I was in for the day, along with Signor Romeo, the Boy Aristokitty.? Now it's just WINDY and COLD. Matt and Hanoh should be back from Florida around 1 AM Wednesday.
I can see my calves, my ankles and my feet! I have lost close to 20 pounds since last Wednesday - a combination of losing the excess fluids and severely cutting back on foodstuffs (and NO SALT!). My clothes are literally hanging on me, but I feel OK... getting my strenth back and breathing much easier, with no pain.
I go to see my internist AND my hepatologist on Monday morning (2/15)... (unless of course I'm in the hospital again - but this time to leave with new parts, hopefully).? My MELD is holding steady at 22 and my transplant coordinator seems positive that it will all happen really soon.

Pray Pray Pray!

Jan, thanks and it will be good to see you again.

Sharon, I am glad your family liked them. BTW-Cold Tears was voted the best in the world, and my editor believes that Tattered Justice is better. I do, too…… :-)

Cindy, I would love to come and talk to your students again, but please give me some advanced notice. My schedule fills up fast. I really did enjoy the visit last year.

Hey John,
I teach at Slocum and would love for you to come visit my school. What do I need to do to get you here?

John Folsom/Foxjohn
02/02/10 09:13 PM
Sandy,

My agent and publisher sets up most of my schedule. The only ones that I take care of are school visits and book clubs. Both of these have priority with me.

Besides, Slocum isn’t that far from me.

Tell me when and I will get it scheduled if I don’t already have anything, and I will be there. Most of the ones that my agent and publisher schedules are on the weekends so school visits don’t usually interfere.

I am pretty booked up in March, and like Cindy, most schools want me after TAKS.

LOL, it also helps to know what you want me to talk about.

Cindy Greene Hancock
02/04/10 07:21 AM

Dearest John, how's that for buttering you up? 5th six weeks does begin March 1. TAKS is that week for English. I am going to start NOW on the paper work for adding more JOURNEY books to my collection. What kind of discount can you give your "bestest girlfriend"? I read the note that Sandy sent you. SOOOO, will you be able to come during the week maybe the first week in April? Spend the night with me? Maybe my visit will work with a scheduled weekend book signing in this area. Look at your schedule and see what April looks like.

Cindy Greene Hancock
02/04/10 07:29 AM

Sandy, You will love when John comes to talk to your kids. JOURNEY OF THE SPIRIT is a great read for kids. My students from last year are already asking when my "author friend" is coming back. One or two have sent John their "manuscripts". They were thrilled when he wrote back to them. My school e-mail is hancockc@castleberryisd.net. Please write me there if you want my lessons on JOURNEY or just write me.

John Folsom/Foxjohn
02/06/10 01:47 PM
My dearest Cindy,

LOL, some of this message probably doesn’t sound quite right.

Sorry it taken so long get back to you but I have been out of town then came back and started teaching an online writer’s course.

I am looking forward to visiting your class again, and I will arrange for the same discount just for you….. :-)

But we can discuss it when you attend my book launch. Hope you can make it.

And thanks for the recommendation.

Cindy Greene Hancock
02/07/10 07:41 AM

What an on line writer's course?!?! Can my kids participate?????? Yes, I am planning to see you March 6th. You will be too busy to talk to me about my JOURNEY needs at that time. You will be multi-tasking all that evening. Are you sure we will have quality time on March 6th?

Sandy Wright Smith
02/07/10 12:38 PM

Sorry so long in my reply. I teach 4th Grade, so my wishes are really for my friend, who teaches High School:English,Geography, and History. My school is also working on TAKS ,and our last tests will be the last week of April. So, I'm guessing that the first week of May would work well for us. The High School Principal is Cliff Lasiter, and the H.S. English teacher is Deborah Work. BTW, Slocum is about a one hour drive from Lufkin. Although my children tell me that's driving too fast. I make the trip fairly often because my mother lives at Pinecrest now.

John Folsom/Foxjohn
02/08/10 01:49 PM
Cindy,

There are a lot of online writer’s courses. I taught nine of them last year, but I am only doing five this year. They can be really time consuming.

Yes, usually in an online class anyone who pays can participate, but this wouldn’t be a good one for them. This is more of an advances class for published authors—besides, it’s too late.

LOL, I will be talking and signing hopefully, but it only lasts two hours and we can talk after it. For you, I will make time.

Sandy,

That’s okay—there is plenty of time. Give your friend my e-mail address: it’s johnfoxjohn@yahoo.com and my web site is www.johnfoxjohnhome.com

Or better yet, bring her to Lufkin on March 6th and come by the library and see me…. :)

I know how TAKS is—I am a retired teacher so I understand.

Slocum is an easy drive compared to some I made. LOL, I did a book tour this summer starting at Lufkin and going to the Northeast Part of Wisconsin and coming back through Illinois and now to Louisiana.

Now, that was a drive.

Your mother living at Pinecrest is a coincidence—I live about two blocks from there.

Karen Cloudy Benton

Sandy,
I consult at Pinecrest in Lufkn. Is your mother's last name still Wright. Let me know.

We are planning to get together in Nac and Lufkin the weekend of John's book party.

Several of us will be coming down, going to John's party, and then having dinner at Shawn's and heading over to Banita Creek Hall after.

Saturday March 6--mark your calendars!

This will be for me a wonderful treat after the week before is spent helping with the Extreme Makeover Home Edition House they are building in Tyler. Move that bus!

Latest update from Mike Adams:

I got a call at 11am on Tuesday telling me to come to ER... There was donor and there was a multiviscer?al recipient, but if anything didn't work for him, I got the liver. I sat in ER from noon thirty till 1130p. (the surgeons wouldn't let me go until they were sure that they were going to use the liver on R#1). It's been exhausting.? All my labs, xrays, ekgs, bloodwork, surgical consents, anesthesia consults...? everything was ready for me to be wheeled in. I'm back at home (INDY HOME) now. Waiting for the next call.
At least I'm in the Que. Could be days or weeks but it WILL BE SOON!

For those of you who asked about the church fires in East Texas:

They arrested 2 suspects on Sunday.

February 23rd, 2010 10:50 AM Eastern
Texas Arson Update
by Maggie Kerkman
New details are emerging in the arrests of two men in connection with ten arson fires at churches in East Texas. Police now say they have distinctive footprints of both suspects from several of the fire scenes. The ten fires happened since just the first of this year. 19-year old Jason Robert Bourque and 21-year old Daniel George McAllister are both charged in connection with just one fire for now. That was the fire we covered just about two weeks ago at Dover Baptist Church on the outskirts of Tyler, [ ] about an hour and a half east of Dallas. The convenience store we shopped in that day was just a few blocks from Dover Baptist Church. In recently released arrest affidavits, investigators say Bourque and McAllister stopped there too and were caught on surveillance tape around the time of the arson. A similar scenerio happened just about an hour later and about five miles down the road. That’s when the Clear Springs Missionary Baptist Church caught fire. Borque was allegedly spotted a short time later in surveillance tape from another nearby convenience store.

According to affidavits, a rock was used to bust out glass in a nursery in Dover Baptist Church, and a back door was kicked in to provide access to the building. What the documents do not say is how the fires were started, or more importantly, why. The ten different churches range in denomination from Baptist to Methodist. Many are small congregations on lonely rural roads. No particular race or ethnicity was targeted. Police are keeping mum as to a possible motive. The two suspects each are held on a $10 million bond and will likely face other charges in the days to come. Police say the two used to attend the same church, which was not one of the congregations that was burned.
