Joe was born 4/6/1946 and died 4/20/1996 in Eagle Point Oregon.
Joe had been a good friend since St. John's Catholic School. We used to play on the basketball team. Joe was a big guy and wasn't the best player. What he lacked in skill he made up for with brute strength. I remember many fouls calls on Joe because he never let an opposing player get into his way. He usually went right through him.
At the same time he was always light hearted and enjoyable to be around. The last time I saw him was at his mother's funeral at Claffey and Rota. There was only a few in attendence and I remembered her fondly. After the service we stood and talked for a while. My wife Karin taught his foster son at Silverado Middle School.
...I remember hanging with Joe in that creek area near the Schwinn bicycle shop downtown after school...I remember being jealous of Joe who started shaving in the eighth grade...wondering if I would ever get hair on my baby face...memories that have not faded...
We all liked Joe -- us St. John's guy's. As I remember he came from New York in the 6th grade and yes he was shaving and the envy of us all. He could make us laugh until we had a belly ache . Always a GOOD guy gone way too soon. Thanks Dave for you story of Joe.
Joe was a very good friend to me. We did a lot of crazy stuff together, and always laughed a lot. We took a trip to Reno in his old Ford, and he got a ticket for going too SLOW on the freeway! That thing just wouldn't go any faster uphill.. I laughed for a month! He was a very caring and considerate guy, and I still miss him.

There was only one Joe Minnena. A fun guy, good catcher, a person you never forget. As with so many others, it's difficult to believe that he's gone.
