Greg was one of the two or three most gifted musical artists in our class. He played the trumpet & played at the professional level in high school. Unfortunately he died in a bicycle accident before our Senior year. We had a number of excellent musicians, inculding several trumpet players in the band & orchestra. Good as they were they couldn't touch Greg. He was named MVP of the band (a no-brainer) for our Junior year. He would possibly have had an exceptional career in music if he had lived.
Greg was an old friend of mine, and I suppose I was one of the last to see him, as he crashed his bike while another friend and myself were riding down the hills, and that crash was to prove fatal, and stayed with him till the ambulance could reach us. The sad thing about that was his father did not want him to have a car which was too dangerous, so the "safe option" was what killed him. A good friend, and the first one in my life to die so close not only to where we lived, but in my age group. He was a great loss to me.
Greg was one of my closest friends in junior high and high school. We grew up together in Racho Del Mar. I remember the day after the accident, when Van Clouse was at the bus stop in tears, and told me about the accident on the old dump road. It was a dirt road with occational steep terraces, and it was hard to brake on your bike without loosing control in the loose dirt. I broke the news to Mr. Crane, in the band room, as soon as I arrived at school. Other kids were there and I still remember the stunned silence. Very sad. Greg was a total character and fun to be with. Talented too, I think he was ranked second in the state as a high school trumpet player. The cheerleaders used to love it when he did the "horse laugh" with his trumpet (when the opposing team made a mistake)..that was his real talent, and it was hilarious. He was up for anything and lived his brief life to the fullest. I still think about him, Van, and you too Pat. I had no idea you were with them that day.
