My Brother John Nance passed away from a plane crash in Idaho on 31 October 1983 , He was a member of the Idaho Air Guard as a crew chief on F-4 aircraft, Buddy as we called him was a purple heart veteran of Vietnam , Bud also recieved the marine Corp. Medal for a incident where a marine fell or jumped from a ship at night and Bud went in after him, the rescue was not sucessfull. Buddy had many air medals for combat missions in the US Marines as a Gunner on helicopters, He was stationed in Phu Bai and was wounded in 1967 he spent some time in japan recovering and then went back to duty by January 1968 were he was again wounded in the siege of Khe Sanh, this time he recovered in country , He flew as my gunner in a US Army Huey helicopter during his recovery , Bud was a free spirit and got into parachuting and sky diving. He carried some wounds from combat till he died but never complained about his service, he was a proud marine and our family and his friends honor his memory.
I’ve just joined the class of 65 and am saddened by all who have passed over. John was one of my favorite friends. He and Jimmy Alred were always characters and good friends. I was lucky enough to have classes with them. They were practical jokers and always made me laugh. To them, I was “Dunky or YoYo and there was always a twinkle in their eyes and impish smiles to make me wonder what they were up to. I will always remember both John and Jim with loving thoughts. They made high school fun! Bless their families and thank you for your service.
I remember John Nance from my senior French class (taught I believe by Mary Ellen Boyett--was she married by that time?). John sat right in front of blonde knock-out Toosje Bakker. John would sit sideways in his seat and they'd spend the whole hour talking. "Mr. Nance, please back to front!" I thought of Nance, and Bakker, as sort of high school "beautiful people"--they both had great tans, and were attractive and cheerful. Somehow, it's never the upbeat charming ones you think will turn out to be heroes.
