It is so sad to see that Jimmy Gondola has been added to this list. When we were both about 5 or 6 years old, Jimmy had started school at the Donaldson Way School. There was no school facility, so the Distict bought or rented 6 new houses located in a dead end court. Each house used for for a specific grade. Due to my late entry, I didn't know any of the kids and I had no school supplies. I was seated next to Jimmy Gondola. When the teacher asked all the kids to take out their Crayons from their cigar boxes, I started to cry because I didn't have a cigar box. Jimmy Gondola told me not to cry and shared his crayons with me. He was my very first friend in the first grade. He was a great friend when were kids.......
I never met Jim until a summer session during high school. We were in the same class, so we hung out together. One day we were in a hurry to get to class and I bumped into a girl. Her boyfriend got upset, and was fully prepared to kick my ass. Jim knew the guy, and asked him to back off - saved me from a pretty good ass-whipping, I'm guessing. Jim was like that. Big, but a genuine good guy that watched out for his friends.
Just a side note, the girl turned out to be Luann Stockton, who would later become my sister-in-law when I married her sister, Lucy. The boy was Don Goleno, who later married Luann. I don't think he ever put the pieces together, and that I was the guy he wanted to beat into a pulp. Don is a great guy.
