Since high school, I have made some changes in my life. I have worked as a custodian for McRoberts School, as a cabinet maker for Spangler Cabinets, at two coal tipples, as a coal truck driver, and as a surface mine heavy equipment operator and foreman. Now, I am employed by Humphry's Enterprise in Virginia where I have been a heavy equipment operator for nine years. As we all know, coal business has always been good today and bad tomorrow and coal jobs have been here today and gone tomorrow BUT Thank God this one has been stable.
I am proud to say that one day I found Jesus Christ as my Savior. I am now preaching His word and have a church at Jenkins, New Freedom Worship Center. I was at Moore's Chapel two and a half years before opening New Freedom Worship Center. The church is non-denominational. Everyone is welcome. The doors are open to come and worship our Lord and Savior in freedom.
I enjoyed being on the track team in high school as a low hurdler, going to vocational school for automotive mechanic and riding to vocational school with Jr. Welch. Yea, and skipping school every now and then with Curt Baker (SHHHHHHH, maybe they still don't know).
Along with a lot of friends Curt was my buddy. In grade school, we were a pretty good team on Mr. Vance's baseball team. He played third base and I played shortstop. I'd still like to play another game.
One of the funniest moments was on our senior trip. Oh boy! I believe Me, Curt, Gary Hall, Randy Cantrell, Jimmy Huff, and maybe Randy Meade, I'm not sure but anyway, I had our hotel window open and was hollering at some girls from another school that were down a couple of floors. And just down under us in another room were some guys hollering at them too. Oh boy! Curt got a flower vase and poured the water out the window. I don't remember if they got wet or not but he got their attention!
Well I'll end with this. I want to thank God for our school days and also for my parents John and Betty Quillen and a wonderful sister, Rhonda Gail (Quillen) Johnson, class of 1972. Our dad died several years ago with cancer. He was a wonderful man. My mom is still living and is a wonderful mom. We grew up hard but we had a good time. Life is just a vapour. We're here for a little while and then we vanish away. Enjoy life, find Jesus and hang on!
