The following is from a newspaper article regarding the accident:
THREE KILLED IN 896 CRASH
Three Middletown residents died after the driver lost control of their car and slammed into three trees by the side of Route 896, a half-mile south of Newark, according to Newark Police.
Christopher L. Shipley, 21, Kimberly Ann Spohn, 20, and Krista Marshall, 18, were all pronounced dead on arrival at Christiana Hospital just before midnight Thursday, police said.
The driver of the car, Jay Brackin Jr., 21, of Townsend, was treated for head and internal injuries and was listed in critical condition Sunday.
A preliminary Delaware State Police investigation suggests the involvement of alcohol in the accident.
Police said Brackin was the only one wearing a seatbelt.
Police gave this account of the crash:
Brackin, who was driving a Pontiac Sunbird at an apparent high rate of speed, tried to pass a truck on the right by going onto the shoulder.
Brackin lost control of the car, and at 10:55 p.m. the car hit three trees in succession before coming to rest.
Spohn and Shipley were ejected from the vehicle upon impact with the third tree.
The vehicle stopped about 40 feet from the first tree trunk.

Krista and Kim and I became friends through Julie Toms, who I attended New Castle Baptist with when we met. We all used to ride horses together through the corn fields in Port Penn and we had a lot of good times. There was an old cemetery that Kim, Krista, Julie and I would ride near and get spooked and race the horses back to Julie's farm. I remember Krista and Kim's smiles. We we girls in 8, 9 and 10th grade having a good time outdoors. When I came to Penn we spoke a little bit but never really hung out other than with Julie and the horses. I remember that when they were killed in the accident, Julie was away and I was going through a lot in my personal life. The last thing I wanted to see was Kim or Krista's car on the front page of the newspaper in a rumpled mess. I remember having to call Julie and tell her and we cried on the phone together. I think of these guys whenever I go riding or I see a horse that resembles Krista's because she used to talk to her pony like it was a person, and she was so funny.
