After graduation I attended Ball State University and majored in Physical Education with a minor in U.S. History. I played football for the Cardinals and earned a BS degree in 1971. In 1975 I received my Masters Degree from Indiana University.
I knew in Junior H.S. that I wanted to be a teacher and coach. Mr. Wegesin was my inspiration and that led me to my career choice. I know all the guys remember how in P.E. we sat in squads for roll call. We had to sit at attention and the squad leaders had to answer, "All hear sir!" if everyone was in attendance. I used this method of taking roll in my P.E. classes as well. I think Mr. Wegesin would be proud of that.
I started my coaching career when I was student teaching at Tri High. By then Coach Wegesin was teaching there and I was fortunate enough to do my student teaching under his guidance. It was the fall of 1970 and the school was starting a football program. Coach Wegesin was the first head coach and I was one of his assistant coaches.
I was a teach at Charlestown H.S. in southern Indiana beginning in 1971. That first year I helped start the schools football program. I was an assistant coach for eight years and in 1979 I became the head coach. I held that position for twenty five years retiring after the 2003 season. I've always said that we must have been doing something right because they never ran me out of town. I retired from teaching in 2011.
Also in 1971 I started the wrestling program at Charlestown and was head coach for nineteen years. During the spring I was involved in coaching both the girls and boys track teams.
I did manage to find some time to do somethings beside coach. I was very active throughout the 80's and 90's in auto racing. I've been a crewmember on some United States Auto Club sprint and midget teams and I was an officer in several Indiana based racing clubs.
I retired from teaching in 2011 after 40 years.
The usual golf and fishing leisure activities take up the warmer months. Spent four summers racing a TQ Midget with my son Chris. Our race team was named No Wing and A Prayer Racing. We race with the UMRA King of Indiana Midgets series and I managed a 7th place in the point standing in 2014.
Came out of coaching retirement in 2014. Help restart the H.S. program here in Scottsburg. A former player of mine got the head coaching job and asked me if I'd help him. I am now the Offensive Coordinator for the Warriors. We will begin a full varsity and schedule in 2017. I am also coaching track at the H.S. working with the throwing events.
Two final comments; 1. Thanks to Denny and Don for getting Our Class Web Site Online. Great job! 2. I hope everyone can attend our next class reunion which will be, "can you believe it?" 50 years! since we graduated.
I've always thought we were so fortunate to growup in the 50's and 60's. I wouldn't trade it for anything, plus if you haven't grown up by age 50, you don't have to :) .......as far as school memories, I'll just mention;
Kindergarten; Mrs. Couden's house on 11th Street
Holland Panthers 1st-5th grade. Elementary Basketball Champs 1960
Westwood Wildcats Grade 6
The Castle Grade 7 "LSMFT" Does anyone remember that saying? Being first downtown at lunch to get a "Burger Basket" with fries and a Dr. Pepper, then to Church St. Gym for some killer dodgeball games.
The Old H.S. Bldg. 8th 9th grade... P.E. classes at the Armory. We'll never forget that announcement during 6th period on Nov. 22, 1963.
Grade 10 to 12 Walter P. Chrysler H.S. It didn't get any better than this! What great memories.
